Just a Thought

This will probably sound stupid, but that's nothing new up in here :D

What I'm thinkin'...

-We most likely won't be Super Bowl contenders this coming season

-If we draft a QB, he most likely won't play until the vet we bring in/Moore/Clausen get the injury bug or play terribly

-Next year's draft looks pretty damn good at QB if Landry Jones, Barkley, Luck, & Cousins all jump in

-Even if we do get a QB this year, we will be in position to take one of these solid prospects next year

-So why not just take a random shot at a guy like Stanzi in the 3rd? I mean, we can spend the 1st on a solid top player that can contribute day 1 like Peterson or Dareus which I feel is extremely important and if a random 3rd rounder works out, we look like geniuses.

-If not, its not as bad of a burden if we missed out at the top pick

So basically, draft Dareus/Peterson & Stanzi, throw Ricky America to the wolves halfway through the season and see what happens. Just as big of a risk without a major investment. I'm just saying, if we invest in a QB at number one this year regardless if its Newton or Gabbert, it makes no sense to take another in the 1st next year. Especially if we're giving Clausen another shot. So, let's give Clausen that shot, maybe Moore, if they suck we use Stanzi/Dalton and look like geniuses if they pan out. If not, it makes sense to grab a QB in the 1st in 2012.

I just don't think we're in position for a project QB with the squad we have. We're in a position to just throw whoever in there and see if they work.

Now come on and shout at me and tell me how stupid I am :hat:

And this may be a lot to ask, but can this not turn into a Cam Newton thread? Thanks. :willy_nilly:

I just really don't f*cking know anymore. I'm growing apathetic about our situation and really just dunno. Aahh!!

Now I'm taking a break until the draft

Not stupid. I just don't agree.

Young prospects? We've already got that. Don't think it helps to add another to the mix, even with a lower pick. That's why I'd rather we not go QB in any round.

Are there kids in this drat who may turn out good down the road? Sure, but I don't think our situation this year lends to taking them.

Next year, after we know better what we have (or don't have) in the guys already here, then I'll be all for it.

Why waste our 3rd rounder when we could draft a DT or another much needed position. If I was the panthers I would just tank the season. We are going to rebuild for a few years so why not give Clausen a year to try to prove himself, we already have the toughest schedule so why take a qb this year that is a huge risk when we can wait another year for Luck? We can rebuild our Defense this year then next year we can rebuild our offense. We will still have plenty of cap room as well so we could sign our rookie QB some great FA WR and TE. I am so happy we just have a few more days untill the draft.

I'm with you on giving Clausen another shot, but it has nothing to do with hoping for Andrew Luck. I want to see if Jimmy C can legit succeed with a competent offensive coaching staff, but if not, we could have a secondary option within the year like Dalton or Stanzi to take a shot with rather than dumping it off to some old washed up vet. I mean, Webb played ok for Minny towards the end of last season in that mess. Rookies get thrown into these situations more and more every year just like Clausen last season but some actually succeed...Colt McCoy is a perfect example of a QB-type we can find if we make a hit with someone in the third.

Again, if Moore, Clausen and one of these guys doesn't pan out, then we have another chance at getting a QB in 2012. If we just go QB #1 right now we are seriously handcuffing this franchise imo and I'm not talking about the individual players themselves in this year's draft but the situation itself.

drafting a QB any other place than #1 is bit silly

Again, given our situation, it just doesn't make sense right now imho

We'll most likely agree to disagree

I just think this is a nice meeting point between the two options that something great can potentially come from. If not, it really isn't that big of a mis-step and we'll be in position to draft a QB in the first next year. If we jump this year at #1 we are committing to a guy for at least 2 years and there's no way we would make a run for any of the QB prospects over the next 2 years even if Gabbertt/Newton look terrible or just don't adapt well.

Edit: You gotta do something at QB and the vet thing is just not enticing. Also: Scot, you should know better than anyone sometimes these youth players can be good from the get go. So why not risk it with a 3rd? I think its a solid situation that doesn't handcuff/limit us but it still shows we're willing to take a risk.

Reaching for a QB at #1 in a year that you view the QBs to be down (if our FO feels that way) seems like desperation. Not a good way to start off a new regime. Rivera seems like a cool cat, I don't see him feeling a need to reach. The only way we take a QB at #1 this year is if they feel that he really is a must have prospect.
