Taking a QB may put us in the cellar

You act like it's 2004. Not 2011.

Whatever year it is, it isn't the last and only chance we'll ever have to draft a QB in the first round.

Drafting the guy who's the best QB right now is only wise if he really is worth the pick, and is the best player available at a position of need.

The current prospects fail both tests.

A little misleading (though not intentionally so). Here's why.

Yes, that's the round they were drafted in, but it's not how they were acquired by their current team.

To be completely accurate with where you're going, I think you have to factor in free agency and trades.

Yep. Texans sent a 2nd and switched 1st round picks.

That Cutler trade. A billion picks.

Cassel traded for the 34th pick

That's more than fair, so:

Orton and Cutler is kind of a push since they were traded for each other.

Schaub was traded for two second round picks which raises his "value". It was a 2nd and fifth for Cassel I believe, so same deal.

The Vick situation is about as extreme as circumstances can get.

Fair enough on Campbell, Fitzpatrick and Brees (but it goes without saying he was coming off a wicked injury and many thought he was done)

I wasn't trying to make a point or anything; I just wanted to put to bed the whole 1st rounder vs late round/undrafted FA debate. I had no idea what it would be going in. But it appear that the conclusion after looking at it is teams have to invest a first round pick in the draft or similar value (as was done for Schaub and Cassel) if they want to get a starting caliber guy now.

but were we not already last in offense? can't get any lower than that.

Success isn't measured by unit rankings.

Worst record in the league for a second year in a row and a blown #1 pick (whomever it is) puts us in a worse spot than we are now.
