Taking a QB may put us in the cellar

The longer the CBA draggs on the worse it will be for young teams especially young teams with new coaches trying to implement differant things. And if that is not bad enough we are a yong team with new coaches and without a qb on the roster that we have confidense in.

I can't believe how far this team has fallen since 2008. Truly sickening. There is a good chance we take a QB with the number one pick next thursday which will mean we have taken 3 QB's in the last 8 rounds of the draft. Ridiculous

There is also a good chance that the 3 QB we take will bust just as hard as the other two, and even worse, take a large paycheck with him.

2nd and 6th round QBs generally aren't drafted with the expectation they will be a franchise QB.......they are generally bodies who sometimes workout as depth (which is important for teams).

A qb is a all or nothing gamble. We will be betting on Cam's upside or Gabbert's adaptability. Folks love to say that all positions are a gamble but taking a QB is the biggest. Our brand new coaching staff will be gone within 4 years if they miss on the QB lotto.

PP7, AJ Green, and Marcel Dareus are safer and all fit a need. We need a new big WR that fits the new offense. We need a shutdown corner to slide Gamble to second CB. We need a scheme diverse DT. Lastly the fact is we needed a veteran QB last year and we still need one now.

people keep saying that but NFL draft history doesn't support it.

I'll agree with the 6th round QBs but not with 2nd round QBs. If you're a general manager and you are drafting projects in the 2nd round, you need to find a new job.

Most championship teams are fielded with talent found in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Take a chance with other people's jobs!

I like how people are assuming Cam Newton is/isn't going to be able to understand the playbook right away, as if that's the only part of being an NFL QB.

He should probably work on his footwork, coverage recognition, ball placement, and accuracy before worrying about calling, "flip right, double-X, Jet, 36 counter, naked waggle, X-7, X-quarter."

I didn't say projects....I said they are generally not drafted w/ the expectation of being a franchise QB.

most good teams are fielded with talent found in later rounds.......but not at the QB position.

Not at QB. I'd be willing to bet, without actually doing the work to look it up, there's as many UDFA starters as 2nd rounders at QB. Maybe more if you combine 2nd and 3rd than UDFA. For every Brees in the 2nd you got 3 UDFA Romos/Delhommes/Warners and 6th round Bradys.

Edit: Beat me to my first sentence, CRA :P

I can see it now: We take a defensive player first, sign a 30+ year old qb and then proceed to win 6 or 7 games next year. When we have the chance to pick a qb next year the same people saying to "wait till next year" start claiming that we should pass on a qb again because we were "so close to being good " with random 30+ qb.

If we take Cam, and suck in 2012 and have a top 5 pick in the 2012 draft and then Cam can progress like Freeman did I'll be happy with the pick. We could probably trade down in 2012 to another QB needy team (especially if we're in the top 2) trying to get Luck or Jones or Barkely or whoever else steps up this year and rack up on good talent next year. Of course I'd rather do well next year, but if we have a year of growing pains because of a new QB, well that's usually part of having a new QB. I'd rather that than renting mid to low tier QBs every few years.

and Brees was the 33rd pick....one spot out of the first.
