Dareus on Sports Science

I want him to be the pick. He strikes me as big, stupid, and mean. If the coaches can keep his weight in check and muscle him up even more he could be a beast in the future.

He won't be Suh, but he'll at least be decent. If you have to pick at #1, it's better to take BPA, IMO.

We need to make sure our O can stay on the field for more than a three and out before we get giddy about a dream defense. No matter how good it is, our piss poor O will only tire them out. Too bad the options for a good QB are slim to none this season.

A rookie qb is going to drastically improve our offense immediately?

Even if a rookie qb did improve the offense, what would be the point when all the other team has to do is run the ball to keep the ball out of the hands of this magic offense you think will spring to life from a rookie"s arm.

I think it's time that we dispel this little myth about the Detroit Lions once and for all.

Matthew Stafford first beat out Daunte Culpepper in training camp. If a QB is drafted, they will have to display that they are able of piloting a team in the NFL more proficiently than who is on the roster. Snort and chuckle about the current crop, but Matt Moore won the starting job convincingly. If he is retained, which wouldn't be surprising due to the need of some experience at the position, there is just as much of a chance of Moore retaining the job. Mind you that is all hypothetical, but so is the idea that a drafted QB is going to start right away.

With that said, Stafford went 2-8 as a rookie in 2009 and 1-2 in 2010. He has a record of 3-10 and has yet to complete a full NFL season, even when combining both seasons. The Lions are 5-12 without Stafford since he's been drafted.

This is in no way an attempt to imply that Matthew Stafford is not a solid QB that is worth the #1 pick. As of right now, that's still to be decided (unless people like to go off of what they think as opposed to what they know).

One more time:

2009

w/ Stafford: 2-8

w/o Stafford: 0-4

2010

w/ Stafford: 1-2

w/o Stafford: 5-8

Suh was drafted in 2010 at #2 overall. Does this mean that a DT will be the catalyst to win football games? Not at all. Does it mean that the team is guaranteed to win by drafting a QB #1? I would think that this supports the opposite.

By drafting Dareus, the team addresses the glaring need at DT with one of the "sure picks" of the draft. I understand that when people that want a QB post up Brees, Freeman, and Ryan as support for their argument, that they're trying to compare our current stable to the other starters. Which is fine, but a QB isn't going to counter those players. Having a big bastard in the middle that keeps the running game in check while also collapsing the pocket on passing plays for the DEs will affect those QBs.

I do admit, seeing people say "We don't need somebody to take up two blockers" makes me laugh. Especially when that means 2 out of the minimum of 5 linemen will be tied up on a rookie, leaving the other 3 to deal with the other DT and two DEs in one-on-one situations, pending the amount of blockers of course.

EDIT: Also, in regards to the Brees/Freeman/Ryan argument, ask Colt McCoy what Marcell Dareus does to QBs ;)

Watching the video, I really hope we get this beast. He was very impressive along with his college career. Plus, he seem like a cool & humble person. Having him, our LBs & DEs will help us do better. None of our current DTs are the answer, even though I think Landri isn't too bad.

If he's the pick i'll be ok with it. But it won't end our problems in the least though.

With the potential franchise player voids at WR and RB due to the uncertainty of Smitty and Deangelo's future, that can't be shrugged away.

Combine that with the uncertainty at the most critical position (quarterback), I hope our defense will be #1 in the league. Because that may be the only aspect that could possibly keep us from not going 1-15, again.

Your points are spot on.

Our offense is a bigger issue than our defense. However, adding an over-hyped project QB to the mix will NOT make our offense any better for the next season or two.

Reaching and picking for a position of need, when the player is NOT worth that pick, has and will continue to be a disasterous move....one that perennial losing franchises make.

If a truly Top QB were in this draft, I would be screaming that we should take him. The guys that are there (Newton, Gabbert, Locker, Mallett, etc)...none fo them are anywhere close to a #1 pick.

Agree that our offense needs help and the 3 and outs killed us last year. It seems like we always go defense, but this year, I really hope we take Dareus. We got run over a ton last year and killed in short yardage. Dareus would obviously be sick on the interior and is so athletic, that he can shift outside if Rivera and McDermott want to add a few wrinkles to their defenses. Watching the Sports Science only makes me want him (no homo) more. For what it's worth, I feel the Sports Science clips do nothing but make every player look better. Suh, he is not, but a gamechanging anchor in the middle that makes everyone around him better, he is.

    • He doesn't need to play in 2025. And maybe not 2026 either from what I've read. This is but one peer-reviewed selection:    "A devastating complication of returning to sport following ACL reconstruction (ACLR) is a second ACL injury. Strong evidence now indicates that younger, more active athletes are at particularly high risk for a second ACL injury and this risk is greatest within the first two years following ACLR." https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5226931/     Regarding your first question... "The optimal timing of ACLR is an important clinical decision that affects patient outcomes significantly. Even though there is no consensus in the literature, there are some trends regarding timing of ACLR. Various authors suggest that ACLR be performed at least 3 weeks after injury in order to avoid arthrofibrosis. More important than time alone, objective criteria including perioperative swelling, edema, hyperthermia, and ROM are important indicators of when surgery should be performed." https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4004131/#:~:text=The optimal timing of ACLR is an important clinical decision,in order to avoid arthrofibrosis.
    • Not sure I would be so sure they feel worse than us - their QB was better than Bryce at in the first season, they got DJ Moore, and 2 more high caliber draft picks.  We had to give up basically our entire defense this season indirectly to make that happen and we still have no true #1 WR.  Not saying I would rather have Caleb over Bryce at this point - but I would rather have their team situation and draft picks hands down.
    • A lot of people think this draft is weak at QB--I think, after the first five picks of the first round, there are a ton of developmental QBs who could develop into the role--here is the psychology behind it--Bryce becomes the mentor--you can learn as much by teaching others than by being taught.   It also makes him a true leader.  But I think there are a few QB in this draft that might not be ready now, but in 2 years, could be NFL starting QBs--Howard, Rourke, Ewers, Milroe, Dart, etc.  Talk about a cheaper backup and one that could evolve into trade capital--or if Bryce can't find consistency-his replacement.  Round 3 will have some of these qbs--maybe early day 3.
