Jerry Rice: Accuracy, not race, the issue with Cam Newton

Thats because Panthers are thinking of taking him and analysts hate to be wrong.

This might be true for some of them, but I'd say it's impossible to prove, and rests on a slippery slope. I'd say just as many, if not more of them, have seen his workouts and interviews, and changed their opinion based on the merit of his work, rather than what they heard about him.

Not as predictable as the way some of us reacted to the notion Cam Newton would be our draft pick this offseason. The manner in which some of us carried ourselves and put our paranoia and fear on display was easy to predict. Some of yall really are out of touch with how this football team is perceived. Yall think its just me. LMAO!!!

Im gonna be serious for a minute. I understand when people like Mav express concerns about accuracy and footwork. I know he's not perfect no QB rookie is. I understand KT when he calls out people on racism for playing up the stereotypes of young black men and black qb's. I've heard Todd McShay and other tv guys along with huddlers say he's gonna act up when he gets his money, he's a thug, only compare him to black qb's and the unsuccessful ones at that. We here about a college student cheating on test his freshman year while at the same time you damn near have to hire a private investigator to find out Blaine was drinking underage getting in street fights. I dont think cheating on test or buying a stolen laptop is worse than public intoxication and assaulting someone but if I had to call one a thug I'd go with the latter. Not here but other message boards like ESPn I'm seen plenty of blatant racists comments like I dont want no black qb for my team or Russell comparisons and plenty of racial slurs. I dont think everybody that dpesnt want Cam is racists but the ones use these stereotypes as factors against him put themselves in that category. No offense to white people but unless you grew up and hang with black people all day it's unlikely you will notice the subtle racism in america. To most white racism is over anyone bringing it up is making excuses and playing the race card. There's plenty of racism here in america. There's still racist white people, black people, asain, spanish, ect... I respect jerry's opinion and agree somewhat, but I think he's talking more about the football mechanics accusations. Warren Moon was talking about the work ethic, personality and intelligence accusations.

The same complaints you saw here about Cam is what people like myself who've been here over 7 years saw about Vick, McNabb, McNair, Culpepper, __________ (insert black NFL QB here). It was always the same ole same ole, and then they turn around and tell us how some undrafted pocket passing scrub is gonna take us to the promiseland. And why we need to put faith and patience behind them. When said scrub fails, we just ignore them and hype up some other guy who's similar. Maybe he'll succeed, maybe he wont, but we know for certain we dont want a guy like that Cam, or that Vick, or that McNabb, blah, blah, blah. People have caught on to this and the Panthers know it. Which is why they're switching up how they market and present themselves to their fans. Smart idea IMO. No question the most sensitive and polarizing issue on CarolinaHuddle.com is the "black quarterback". It triggers a rage and fear out of some of us that is quite laughable for a losing franchise like ours. We've gotta be more than just some small market team that prides itself on not having any blacks play QB. When my family decided to buy PSLs and invest in this franchise back in the mid 90s, if we knew that this is what our money was going to, we would've thought twice. We thought we were buying into a football team that aimed to represent EVERYBODY not just "chosen elites" who deem themselves the ultimate judge of character and ability.

You do know many people who have said they wanna pass on Cam have also suggested bringing in McNabb as a stopgap right?

The Racism/hate argument gets brought up by me during a few situations that I will point out. Like when people say he's a one year wonder that's discrediting the work he put in last season. When they question his leadership & work ethic after what he did at Blinn/Auburn.

The blind comparisons to running QB's like Young Mike Vick, YY or The Golden Calf of Bristol, when in mine and Mayocks opinion he's more of a Big Ben. Or the comparisons to bust QB's like J. Russell due to some strange idea that he'll get lazy after he gets paid smh. Last but not least the direct Nawrocki comments mostly the fake smile having not stepped foot in a room with Cam. This is all hate imo that is somewhat racially motivated but that's just how I look at it.

How is it comparing him to The Golden Calf of Bristol evidence of racism?

Would you deny that Newton and The Golden Calf of Bristol played in similar types of attack? (the facts are against you on that one)

On the rest, I wouldn't assume everybody knows about the Blinn thing. Not everyone follows college football or the draft closely.

And yes, it is possible to question someone's leadership and work ethic without it being racial, work ethic especially when they've been caught cheating. For the record though, those two things aren't on my list of concerns about Newton.

As to the PFW comments, those are compiled from scouts opinions. Are they valid? Derned if I know, but I've known my fair share of people who were fake, and it was never specific to race, so you can't make that assumption.

And on the Russell comparisons, Russell is the boogeyman of the draft right now. He's what everybody fears getting, so when people worry about potential busts, that's the name they'll invoke. Till Russell came along, that role belonged to Ryan Leaf, and every guy that was 'boom or bust' got the 'next Ryan Leaf' moniker. Eventually, someone else will take that mantle (hopefully not someone drafted by the Panthers).

Bottom Line: An old saying, proven true by experience. If you really want to look for something in people, you'll find it, whether it's actually there or not. That's what I think is happening with a good amount of the racism and hate stuff.

It doesn't take hate to have a negative opinion of a guy's quarterbacking skills.

Poor argument: Gabbert's arrest didn't take a PI to find out about. It was in his PFW profile, same as the stories of the Newton incidents. And FYI: The charges against Newton also included intimidating a witness.

I haven't talked much about the off-field stuff though because I don't think you need to go that far in this case. I don't want any of the quarterbacks in the draft, and for football reasons.

I don't want Cam, but do want McNabb and Tyrod Taylor, so where do I fall in the scared, racist, paranoid spectrum?

Ive never seen you lobby for them ever on this board. Ive only seen you speak of Luck or sticking with Jimmy.

Ive created threads dedicated solely to Tom Brady and his standing as the game's best QB, and yet Im probably called a "racist" more than anyone on this board. No one's ever been banned for calling me that either. When is JackOfAllTrades gonna make a thread telling us how great some black QB is?

How did I know I would have to explain this to you? What I meant was how many times have you heard about Blaines incident in popular magazines and national television? 0. Newton wasnt charged with no damn intimidating a witness you got that from the Nacrockski article I looked for it and couldnt find that information anywhere esle. You always bring up you dont like any QB thats cool with me.
