Jerry Rice: Accuracy, not race, the issue with Cam Newton

Panthro, he had a thread where he broke down 3 out of 4 quarters of the national championship game. It's only one game, but it is what many of us saw from Cam for most of the season in terms of ball placement.

Yeah, a game in which Newton got a back bruise in the start of the third quarter. In fact, he TALKED about his bad performance in that game with Gruden in his QB camp, and how Oregon came out prepared to shut down their offense.

And yet... THEY STILL WON!

And when I asked TRD to break down the SEC game, a game were Newton destroyed the Gamecocks... he refused.

Until he does... all he did was offer a biased opinion on a game where Newton played hurt for almost half of it.

and the way the NFL is looking Newton will have to wait for a cba before being signed and beginning to work with us.

either way we have to wait on our QB. Drafting one doesn't give the team a leg up. Hell, with such a transition, it might put us behind.

As to names, I've listed them before, but I'd bring Gradkowski, one of the Smiths, Bolger, Volek, McNabb, Hasselbeck, and a couple others, depending on what that player wanted and how they fit our offense. I'd bring that FA along with Moore, Clausen, Pike into camp, and keep the best 3.

This is where we differ. I'd back out any of the WCO guys.

Total BS, just 2 months ago, u were on here saying Jerry Richardson would never draft a black QB and now u spend your down time trying convince people that he will!

When the team came out a few months ago and implied they would take the best QB prospect (Cam Newton) I changed my stance and said I would give them the benefit of the doubt that they would make a move. Make no mistake though, what the team has done this offseason is the total opposite of what they had been doing the past 16 years. What was real funny was when people thought if they banned me that the "race" talk and stigma about the Panthers hating black QBs would go away. It didnt, it got worse. Total BS, Panther fans can get behind the 2 worst QBs in the league for simply having a "safe image" they like, but act all proud and mighty to believe in the #1 overall draft pick. This offseason has validated me here, and a lot of people I used to beef with who use to not understand at all where I was coming now feel me and see just how cowardly/ignorant/incestious some of us are.

And that is the root of the arguments. Some people think he sucks, Some don't. However some of us don't think waiting for the perfect QB to fall into our laps is going to work. At least not without us tanking the season (again).

Your correct. That is what it boils down to.

However, what "my camp" is saying is that there are other options, if even they aren't as sexy as having a "Number 1 Overall QB!"

does fully healed = no pain?

I'd assume so.

even mayock will say it's about the body of work. you cant expect to see everything from 1 game tape. or make an assumption from 1 film.

You are right, but I chose that game because everyone watched it. I've seen his "body of work" and my conclusions aren't much different.

You do realize that I stopped my writing after the second drive in the 3rd quarter so MOST of my analysis was when he was healthy, but lets ignore that.

You asked me to do a write up when you wouldn't do the same. On my first one no one actually debated anything they just called me a hater and said he had no issues in the whole game.

If you would like to do a write up of that game I'd love to also, but I'm not wasting my time doing it alone to have the Cam fans just trash it and not talk to it's points.

The second you post your write up, I will post mine.

I think its foolish to not think race is a factor, because that still exists and will never go away. HOWEVER....its important to look it at a case by case basis. Everyone that doesn't like Cam has their own reason, and doesn't automatically mean they don't want a black quarterback. There is still a stigma associated with the "black running QB" and the "running QB" / "athletic QB" in general, that isn't changing.

but what does my opinion matter, this thread will head toward 20 pages of worthless drivel anyway.

Racism exists. I've yet to see anyone suggest it didn't.

With that said, you get folks on here who try to use claim racism or hate every time someone has a concern about Newton rather than actually address the ideas.

It's stupid. It's cowardly. And it's worthless.

Real racism exists. And in it's real form, it accomplishes a lot worse things than having a negative opinion of a particular quarterback.

I've challenged folks on here to tell me exactly how to spot what statements are racist and what aren't. I'll be interested to see if I have any takers (not betting on it).

I want AJ Green. If people talk about how great he is, it wont make me mad. And thats whats most important. My feelings. I can tolerate Green. Make it happen Hurney!

Predictable as always KT.

But, hey anyways, if people do start bashing who I like, at least I don't have to have an intelligent debate with them, because I can always just..

I personally wouldn't trash it and would welcome some more analysis of him. I would appreciate it.

Not as predictable as the way some of us reacted to the notion Cam Newton would be our draft pick this offseason. The manner in which some of us carried ourselves and put our paranoia and fear on display was easy to predict. Some of yall really are out of touch with how this football team is perceived. Yall think its just me. LMAO!!!

You cannot assume that Cam will come around and let that be the basis for your argument. His accuracy needs to come around, his footwork needs to come around, his knowledge of verbage needs to come around, his character needs to come around. If one of these doesn't come around, he is a bust in the NFL. I don't care how many TDs he threw during plays called from the sideline.

And I quote:

“Call something at Auburn that’s a little verbal,” Gruden said, obviously knowing the answer to the question. “What would be a little verbal? Any recollection on that?

Newton: “Um.”

“Gimme something,” Gruden said. “What’s an Auburn play sound like?”

“I mean, you’re putting me on the — on the spot,” Newton said.
