Against all options, Newton makes most sense for Carolina

I have to laugh sometimes when I see the notion of taking the BPA quoted. By whose standards are you picking the player... Yours, mine, ours. How do you know that Hurney etc. don't have Cam rated as the #1 player on their board. Just because Kiper, Mayock, etc. Doesn't have him first doesn't mean that others justifiably rate him first. In fact, I'd be stunned if we pick Newton and Hurney didn't say that he was their highest rated player.

I don't know that they don't anymore than you know that they do.

maybe it's me being an anti-qb jerk but I just don't see how a rookie helps us win now.

sure, in the future. but now?

Cam Newton has NFL SUPERSTAR potential.

Sure he may bust, but that goes for every single player in the draft. Nobody else has near the upside at developing into a franchise player.

If the Carolina Panthers bitch out & pass on Newton, by either drafting elsewhere or trading down, it will be a monumental failure; regardless of how Cam Newton pans out.

High risk comes with high reward. Cam Newton may bust or become a decent NFL QB. However, 2-3 years from now he may be a superstar & the top QB in the league. Deny that all you want, but you're only kidding yourself.

Carolina should be running to the podium on the 28th, period.

Lightning strike, eh?

Yeah, it had nothing to do with the receivers they drafted. It was all Kurt Warner.

Rivers would be an upgrade for just about every team.

Your statement was that the team would look silly for passing on a great QB. My argument is that it's not about who you pass on but what your team does after that. Nobody, NOBODY reporting on the Arizona situation goes, "If only they had passed on Larry Fitz to get one of them QBs!"

And YES, lightning strike. Kurt Warner didn't exactly light the world on fire in NY before AZ picked him up am I correct?

Ask Gruden that for not taking Rodgers. Ask Bill parcells for passin on Matt Ryan and should i go on.Also Parcells didnt get fired but he did recap he should of took him.

Its not an argument that we should take or dont take Newton or gabbert. But we are a rebuilding team and its best to rebuild for the future. We are at number 1 and we have the draft in our hands. When people go back to the draft 4 or 5 years from now they are going to judge did we pick right or not. I have no problems with tradeing down and picking up a vet. But im just tired of my team not having a Quarterback who can go on the field and do what he suppose to do. I want our team to win a superbowl in the next couple of years.

If I thought there was a quarterback as good as Ryan or Rodgers, I'd be happy with the idea of drafting them #1.

I don't.

So.....Newton winning an Heisman & being with a better team with better records than Luck mean he is better than him?? There is a reason why many were talking about him more than Newton until Luck decide to stay in college.

I don't think auburns team was better than stanfords. also@ mr scot Didn't you say all these media and talking heads speculate and don't really know anything? Speculating luck is the cream of the crop this is just like locker was the year before he fell to hell. It changing year to year. there stock rises and drops, someone else could easily jump up and replace luck as the can't miss guy, At the start of the season luck was behind locker, mallet, and ponder.

Of course he is, look at all the awards he won over him and the national title he led Stanford too.

How many of those awards have any accuracy for NFL success? None. Especially for QBs.

BCS champion? doesn't matter.

The fact that you say something that ignorant with such confidence just makes it worse.

There was a time when nobody had as much upside or potential as Tim Couch, David Carr and Jamarcus Russell too.

They call it "risk" for a reason.

And my argument to that is how do you know what would have happened had they gotten a franchise QB and a good, not as great receiver such as Larry Fitz? They became competitive for 2 years maybe? Maybe they still would be? Now where are they? How good did Fitz do last year? Last I checked, not very good.

... he had 90 receptions and like 1100 yards.

Back on topic, nobody is saying "Man, if only they had taken Rivers!", because their pick is working out just fine, even still. They may need a QB now but that is not the same as looking silly and their fans lamenting their pick.

My entire point was that what our pick does means as much as what Newton does, and likely more.

Picking a cornerback when there's never been one taken number one is a safe, secure pick?

No, thats just a flat out retarded pick. Dont think i could continue watching if we had a safety (its a possibility) under contract for 60 mil in 3 years. That would be the worst decision this franchise has ever made, and yes, I am including AE.

Ahh Siefert = Rivera I see :-\

The argument was that the Heisman and National Championship clearly showed that Newton is the best player available and a franchise quarterback.

Take a look back at the last ten to twenty guys who had those titles and then tell me if you think that argument holds any water.

If Luck was clearly better than Newton as so many would love to believe, surely he could've gotten 1 award over him? He came up short each and every time. Oh I forgot, college means nothing for NFL success. The college voters were biased against Luck. It was all a conspiracy. Nothing with Andrew Luck is "proven" despite what some here may think, we dont even know if Luck "could" dominate college football the way Cam did this past season. Lets let him do that first before we start saying he's better than a Cam or a Bradford or a Stafford.

also@ mr scot Didn't you say all these media and talking heads speculate and don't really know anything?

If that's your philosophy, then why should I take seriously these articles suggesting Newton's the best?

(like the one this thread is about)
