Against all options, Newton makes most sense for Carolina

That's not an argument for taking Newton.

If he's not the best available guy, we shouldn't take him. The QB position can be addressed other ways.

I don't know how many times we can find success with the trash another team threw away or didn't want. We hit lucky on Delhomme, and for a while, we had some decent success with him. A lot of the FA qbs this year, I don't them being able to bring the '03-'05 Delhomme quality to the team that empowers and motivates.

Yea, but we still wouldn't have a superbowl yet. We'd have a stud on defense that nobody talks about bc our QB situation is still a joke and we were 7-9 or 9-7 that season. I am not OK with mediocrity, however you appear to be.

Don't be ridiculous :frown2:

I'm not happy with mediocrity anymore than anyone else is. I just don't see the 'path to greatness' the same as you do.

The idea that anyone on here is happy with the team being lousy is just ignorant.

What Newton does will only matter to the fan base if who we pick does poorly and if the team sucks while he does great.

If our player does well and the team improves, nobody is going to give a poo if Newton's good. How many people look at the Cardinals and lament that they didn't take Philip Rivers?

My guess is everyone had they not had lightning strike with an over the hill Kurt Warner... but that is neither here nor there... what is here, is that I'm sure they would loooooove to have Rivers right now and their QB situation stabilized year in, year out and continuously competitive. nice try.

Your path to greatness is the reason we were in the playoffs 3 out of the 9 years

Lightning strike, eh?

Yeah, it had nothing to do with the receivers they drafted. It was all Kurt Warner.

Rivers would be an upgrade for just about every team.

Your statement was that the team would look silly for passing on a great QB. My argument is that it's not about who you pass on but what your team does after that. Nobody, NOBODY reporting on the Arizona situation goes, "If only they had passed on Larry Fitz to get one of them QBs!"

I have to laugh sometimes when I see the notion of taking the BPA quoted. By whose standards are you picking the player... Yours, mine, ours. How do you know that Hurney etc. don't have Cam rated as the #1 player on their board. Just because Kiper, Mayock, etc. Doesn't have him first doesn't mean that others justifiably rate him first. In fact, I'd be stunned if we pick Newton and Hurney didn't say that he was their highest rated player.

I apologize... I take that back, its all in fun banter. I don't see the "path to greatness" as set in stone as some Cam huggers around here do, but what i do see is the chance for this franchise to change everything about it with one draft pick and possibly, just POSSIBLY get on the right path to greatness... which is something the safe, secure pick has NEVER gotten us.

You've done a poor job of explaining your idea of our "path to greatness" Scot. Billy Volek? Hold out hope for Luck to reject us again next season? Start Jimmy Clausen again and hope for the best? How bout you explain why the other options are better for change. Explain how avoiding QB at all costs in the draft is gonna make our franchise better and more relevant? Since you're not happy with mediocrity and all.

Dead wrong.

I believe in the franchise quarterback, and said so even during the Fox years.

The difference is I don't believe "that guy' is available in this year's draft.

I look at this year the same as I do the year that the best QBs available were Heath Shuler and Trent Dilfer. That was a lousy year to pick a quarterback high in the draft. I think this one will be too.

Picking a cornerback when there's never been one taken number one is a safe, secure pick?

Ask Gruden that for not taking Rodgers. Ask Bill parcells for passin on Matt Ryan and should i go on.Also Parcells didnt get fired but he did recap he should of took him.

Its not an argument that we should take or dont take Newton or gabbert. But we are a rebuilding team and its best to rebuild for the future. We are at number 1 and we have the draft in our hands. When people go back to the draft 4 or 5 years from now they are going to judge did we pick right or not. I have no problems with tradeing down and picking up a vet. But im just tired of my team not having a Quarterback who can go on the field and do what he suppose to do. I want our team to win a superbowl in the next couple of years.

And my argument to that is how do you know what would have happened had they gotten a franchise QB and a good, not as great receiver such as Larry Fitz? They became competitive for 2 years maybe? Maybe they still would be? Now where are they? How good did Fitz do last year? Last I checked, not very good.
