Against all options, Newton makes most sense for Carolina

Wrong again :nonod:

As mentioned (several times) I agree that we need a franchise QB.

I disagree that any of the guys in this year's draft give us that.

Is this really that difficult to understand?

If we draft Newton we may have a franchise QB, or he may bust & we're still looking for one 3 years from now. If we go after a mediocre vet we're looking for a franchise guy regardless.

LOL @ this idiot.

Cam Newton is the most efficient passer in NCAA history.

Colt Brennan, Tim Couch and Timmy Chang put up phenomenal stats in college.

Where are they now?

So basically you'd rather sign an aging & mediocre QB than draft a potential franchise QB?

If I thought the guys in this draft were potential franchise QBs, I'd be all for it (I don't).

Negative. I am not "so convinced" Newton is that person. I AM CONVINCED its time to take a chance/gamble for the sake of actually being great and it just so happens that he is the only person worth taking that chance on due to eveeeerrything I've already stated. Attack? no sir, all you choose to do is view my statements as "Cam hugging" and therefore that makes you close minded. I am making statements based on what is best for this franchise, right here, right now, with the draft looming and our team and fans desperately needing a jolt of life in it.

Did I call you a hugger?

You're the one that came out with a post trying to call me old and comparing me to your grandfather complaining about a cell phone, despite the fact I have said repeatedly we need a franchise quarterback.

Why do you think I'm closed minded? Because I don't want to draft the same player as you?

I personally believe that drafting Cam Newton is not the best move for this franchise, not in the short term, and not in the long term. We disagree on that. We also disagree in that I can see how it could pay off big in the future, so I understand why people might want him. Do you understand why people might not want him, other than "being afraid of change"?

There's reports that Jacksonville's ready to move on from Garrard.

Mike Brown is fighting Palmer, but Marvin Lewis wants to let him go. If they get a new quarterback, it might get a little easier (happened once before with Esaiason).

Some of Garrard's best work came when Shula was his QB coach. And Palmer's been coached by Ken Zampese, con of Ernie, mentor of Norv Turner, the guy who every single coach on our offensive staff is connected to.

No, we may not get the chance at them, but again I'll take a stopgap QB over throwing a rookie to the wolves without any reservation.

Jacksonville doesn't have a good replacement, unless they want to go with Edwards or Bouman, and that's doubtful. Maybe they can snag one in the draft, but I just don't see how.

Palmer? Maybe. But without a CBA, it's gonna be tough. Once we have to have him (i.e. post draft), we are going to get royally screwed.

I am not ready to give up our first next year (or more) to get a QB well into their 30's.

You can't lay claim to your opinions being "fact" more than anyone else can.

And they call it a gamble for a reason. They don't always pay off.

Since a single Wide Receiver can do so much for a team, that must be why Minnesota played in the Super Bowl when they had both Randy Moss AND Cris Carter?

...

...

...

...

...

Oh wait.

Randy Moss? Seriously?

What happened to Randy Moss in Oakland?

What has Randy Moss done for Tennesse?

Randy Moss had moments of greatness, but his mental dedication to the game is no where near what Smith's is.

The part where Smith was still extremely productive when it was Moore throwing him the ball?

Or did people just "forget" about Steve Smith in late 2009 and early 2010?

Which proves he's a crucial part of making the passing game work.

Or how about the fact that arguably Jake's best year came while Smith was out for the entire season

And what was our record that year? Oh... yeah... horrible... Jake's numbers were so high, because we were playing from behind and he was having to throw. He still didn't put us in a position to win.

I'm not willing to trade next year's first either.

If we can't get them, we can't, but I'd still rather go that route than pick a quarterback in the draft that I don't think is our best option.

The two scenarios aren't really equal.

Scenario 1 - We draft Cam, and he busts. Three years from now we're looking for a QB. We're out of a first pick player. Meaning that we're at 0. (One player drafted [+1], one player becomes a bust[-1], we're looking for a QB [0])

Scenario 2 - We get a stop-gap QB and take a position of need at #1 (DT). The DT becomes a reliable player. In three years, we're looking for a QB. Meaning that we're at +1. (One player is reliable [+1], we're looking for a QB [0])

maybe it's me being an anti-qb jerk but I just don't see how a rookie helps us win now.

sure, in the future. but now?

Not one player is going to help the next season's Panthers "win now". None of them.... The Panthers record, for the most part, is going to be what is going to be no matter what next season. The Panthers are playing for the future next season anyways. It is TIME for them to draft themselves a franchise QB to have for it!! Waiting to next season is just going to delay that process.

ANALOGY. GOOGLE IT. Was not directly calling you old nor comparing YOU to my grandfather, it was just an example... untwist the g-string. I think you're close minded for wanting to use the SAME formula that has gotten us NOWHERE in the past. sure, I completely understand why some people wouldnt want him, I'm on the fence myself. I just want something to be excited about and nobody else in this draft offers that. after all... this is just ENTERTAINMENT, so before you go off on the "I want to be excited" part.. I am a FAN of a sports ENTERTAINMENT team and want to be ENTERTAINED. Not bludgeoned to death from constant mediocrity.

And we were still in line to make the playoffs until New Orleans beat us the last game of the year.
