The Cam Newton Effect

Recommended Posts

Earlier last week I was warming up to the thought of Cam Newton. He could be something special. Yes we know he has great potential, but he also has the potential to bust. As far as I'm concerned, I can't really tell which one it will be.

After watching the QB Camp with Gruden, I have drawn the conclusion that Cam Newton does not have the mental capacity to comprehend NFL "verbage" as Gruden called it. Newton struggeld with some of the most basic questions, and used an analogy which probably wasn't the best one to pick from (but I could care less about that). Newton is so far behind in preparation for his game transfering to the Pro's that it will take at least 3 years to develop him. With no sign of OTA's or even training camp, he will even be worse off this upcoming season.

Now my thought process has come to this. We, as the worst team in the NFL (according to record) now have the hardest schedule next season. How this has happened is beyond me. But unless Rivera puts something into the gatorade, I'm convinced we will be sitting at #1 again next season (if not top 3). We will have a variety of potential franchise QB's to select from, even the elusive Andrew Luck. A QB of Luck's caliber would instantly make an impact in the NFL (however not a big splash his rookie season, but still a big difference). While in 2012 Luck/other QB could be doing great things in the rookie world, Cam Newton will still be coming along, developing and learning the pro game.

I honestly believe Luck's rookie season (or another franchise QB next season) will make a larger impact than Newton in his 2nd year as a NFL QB. By the way, I am only using Luck as an example, because next season's QB's are far better than this ones.

So what do we do? Draft Dareus/Peterson (or Green if SS is gone), true blue chip players that will make a large impact for the next 6-10 years, get a vet like Palmer or someone else, let Clausen sit for at least half the season, try with him again (not a Clausen supporter, but I do believe he didn't get a fair shot). At least let him gain some trade value, then pick up our franchise QB next season.

So what do we come away with?

- Blue Chip Player in 2011

- Peyton Manning 2.0 in 2012

vs.

- Cam Newton being a rookie in 2011

- Cam Newton still developing in 2012

- Cam Newton ready to be judged if he can translate to the NFL in 2013

Just to sum this up, you don't need to reach for a QB this season, when there will be ones with a lot more potential next season, and by the looks of where everything is at right now, we will be sitting back in the top 3 next season.

That is all.

ps, stop waiting for luck.

that doesn't mean we need to draft cam but let's get over the idea we're gonna be drafting Luck. I don't want to go QB at #1 but we're extremely unlikely to be staring at Luck next year if we go in a direction other than QB at #1.

You're going to be absolutely annihilated for parts of this post. I hope you brought your flame retardant suit because it's flame on now....

Andrew Luck > Cam Newton

When you buy a new toy, do you want to buy the cheap toy to satisfy you for a short period of time? or do you save your money and get the big toy that will last for a very long time and has better features?

If I'm the kid buying that new toy, I'm picking the one with all the features. Thank you.

And you came up with all these conclusions all by yourself. You are a one man professional scouting team. I am amazed that no NFL team has picked you up yet. So if the Panthers pick Newton they all must be idiots and could have saved hundreds of thousands of dollars just going with your advice.

What I was trying to say in my post, is it doesn't have to be Luck, just simply saying there are better QB's next season. Luck was only an example.

Trust me you're preaching to the choir. I don't want Newton....that's not to say that I'm hoping we lose every game so we can get Luck, I just don't think Newton is the long term answer....

even with the extreme schedule there is no promise luck will enter the draft or that we will still have the number 1 pick. if we don't have the number one pick no team is going to trade us luck no matter what. Who says its going to take cam newton that long to develop? for that matter who's to say who ever we draft next season won't take as long or longer to become a good player?

This bluechip player you speak of who dareus? is he going to really worth passing on a promising qb(gabbert or newton) for the illusion of a dream of getting luck? How do we know he won't be a bust? The chances of us landing the number one pick will increase due to the tuff schedule, but not promised.
