Haynesworth didn't necessarily wreck the market when you see how the deal is really structured. Per Chris Mortensen it's really 4 years, 48 million. The rest is fluff to make it look better (similar to what the Seahawks did with Nate Burleson's supposed 7 year, 49 million dollar "revenge on the Vikings" contract).

What the team might have to wait for is for the DE market to dry up a little. Once guys like Chris Canty and Antonio Smith are no longer options, there'll be more of a market.

"How long will that take?" you ask.

Good question :sosp:

Yea, Haynesworth has 29 million dollar Poison Pill season in year 5.

Well now I'm leaning toward Peppers might just sign a long term deal to stay. I know it's still very early, but unless the Panthers are being extremely rigid the lack of rumblings about a valid suitor point to Peps market value may not be what he thought. He's probably going to be forced to play under the tag or make a deal.

Really unless he just can't stand the smell of Charlotte anymore he should work a deal, I don't believe anyone else will pay him more than he'll make here.

Instead of starting a new thread with minimal info, I might as well just bump up a main one...........

IMHO, i think Pep would like to stay if we build a D-line around him.. i think when Brayton got the starting job as being a mainly 'run-stopping DE', Pep was kinda up in arms.. he doesnt want to be the only one getting pressure.. if we can truly get him some help, im sure he would like to stay..

i mean who really wouldnt want to play for a team with such a nice group of young tallent: with D.Will, Stewart on offense backing you up, grinding out the clock so you can get a breather, and a defense consisting of Beason, Harris, T.Davis, Marshall, Gamble and Godfrey..

if we can keep him this year and find a nice compliment DE or DT in the 2nd- we could easily convince him to stay for the next few years..

Am I really the only one who

a.) Doesn't want Peppers back

and

b.) Fully believes that whenever a decent "out" is presented, he'll pack his bags and bolt?

Changing to a 3-4 won't work, changing coaching staff won't work, building a defense around him won't work, offering him the highest contract in the NFL won't work, and forcing him to play next year won't work.

Peppers is an odd guy and has been his entire life. I really think that when he says he wants out, he means it. I don't think there is anything that will change his mind at this point.

I agree with you. I think forcing him to come back will only waste about $16 million. When a guy just doesn't want to be somewhere making him stay there is not a very good motivational tool.

  • 4 weeks later...

Julius Peppers has been a great player for this franchise. I dont understand why we just dont make him happy and change to a 3-4 defense it would work out great.

Oh wow. I really thought it was over....but let's come back to it...
