What would be the point of Peterson with Asomugha out there and tons of cap room?

Question for those that want Patrick Peterson: Why in the world would we take an unproven corner that's made a name for himself because he's a workout warrior and has had scouts compare him to Terence Newman (good, but definitely not #1 overall good) when Nnamdi Asomugha is going to be a free agent? We'll have tons of money to throw at him if we really are looking to replace Richard Marshall. Asomugha was the first and maybe only corner to ever make #89 his bitch. Doesn't it make a lot more sense to draft a QB at #1 and then go sign Asomugha? Best of both worlds.

Because he's younger, cheaper, potentially just as good and wouldn't require taking part in a bidding war. Not really that difficult to figure.

He may not turn out to actually be that good, but the potential is definitely there.

This pretty much sums it up.

His age? Contrary to what Marty Hurney wants you to believe, 29 is not old for a cornerback, not even in the NFL. Especially not one as elite as Asomugha.

And all things being equal, money reigns king in the NFL. This isn't the NBA. If we offer him the biggest contract offer, odds are that he would sign with us.

We're talking about #1 overall. There's a possibility it could cost MORE to pick Peterson at #1 and sign him than it would be to go after Asomugha. 29 is irrelevant age-wise and there's essentially zero chance that a workout warrior like Peterson is going to turn out to be as good as Asomugha.

A team with Cam at QB and Asomugha and Gamble at CB is MUCH better than a team with Clausen at QB and Peterson and Gamble at CB. I bet it's at least 5 wins better.

Not more expensive with a rookie wage scale.

Cannot predict with certainty that Peterson won't be as good as Asomugha anymore than we can guarantee that Newton will be good.
