Can't really blame anybody for hoping to get a quarterback the caliber of Luck next year, especially given that we have need at that spot.

The hoping to lose big though? Yeah, that I have an issue with. I don't want another year like last year.

People forget you are allowed to trade up in the draft too, and if we got a lot of our other issues fixed this year I'd have zero problem with offering another team a significant pick and/or player package next year to move up and grab Luck (or another franchise quality QB).

Why would we trade up to draft Luck when we'll have Cam Newton with a year under his belt?

Well, if he really is the next Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, then it would definitely be worth it. Of course, that kind of thing is nearly impossible to predict, so no I don't want to see us go through another bad year.

Both of them have been beaten. Not worth tanking a season or wishing for a bad one to get the 2nd coming of either one of them. Get the best players you can get now, and build a winner.

Nobody is going to trade down from the #1 pick if Luck is there anyway...

This. Evidently some fans think that other teams have to do our bidding and trade down for whatever we offer, even though they have Luck sitting there for the taking at #1. That just ain't gonna happen.

Not quite true.

It is possible for a team that doesn't have a need at quarterback to have the number one pick, quite possibly a team that took a quarterback high in the prior draft.

Take a look at this season. Not every team near the top has a quarterback need, and that's true in some drafts.

Honestly, even a team that does have a need might not turn down an "offer they can't refuse".

If that were the case do you know how much it would cost to move up?? Bidding with every other QB hungry team in the NFL including likely Dallas and/or Washington??

It may be possible, but it's highly unlikely, and it's sure as hell not something you should expect to happen. If Luck plays like people expect this season, even teams who already have a good QB won't pass on him, and even if they did, they would be asking for a boat load of picks to trade down.

    • I just switched to prime video with fanduel south. Will I be able to watch the Canes playoff games still?
    • I mean, you can use that "logic," but the problem is that most practice squad players, backups or average guys don't put the play on film that Wharton did when given their opportunities.  Perhaps you'll end up right, but I don't think that just because a guy has been in a rotation makes him inherently less productive because he gets more snaps. I will say that the KC fans I've seen on social media loved him, and considered him their second best DT,  regardless of his "rotational" status, and generally considered him a dawg, so I'm going to give him the benefit of doubt until he shows otherwise.
    • Did I miss something?  The people we have developing players now are not the ones we've had in the past so I don't know what the heck people are talking about when they say we are not good at developing players right now.  We only have one year to go on.  Canales likes young players or players who are on an upward trajectory, especially in FA this year.  Past QB's and what he's done with Bryce are good examples. Tershawn Wharton - 26 Tre'von Moehrig - 25 Pat Jones II - 26 Bobby Brown III - 24 Michael Jackson - 28 Jaycee Horn - 25 Tommy Tremble - 24 We missed on Milton Williams but he's 26. Everyone else we picked up are on 1 year deals.  The Panthers new front office and Canales absolutely scream developmental team. Pick 8 (stay) Tier 1 Elite - Abdul Carter, Travis Hunter and Mason Graham Tier 2 Elite - Jalon Walker, Mykel Williams, Will Johnson Trade down: There are quite a few really good players that fit us at Edge, DT, S and WR mid to late 1st and high 2nd.  Some combos that would be possible that I really like.  Imagine getting 2 of these guys by trading down. Stark, Pierce Jr, Golden, Scourton, Grant, Emmanwori, Ezeiruaku, Umanmielen, Deone Walker, Harmon and this is just off the top of my head.
