QB Camp: Newton

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

As dumb as it sounds, with the cap in place even if we draft newton and luck is at one you take him. His value should be through the roof and assuming cam shows anything year one you could easily ship One of them off for s boat load of picks. I don't want to look like jon gruden with 11 picks but if we pick o e next year and luck is there and were on the clock don't be suprised

Absolutely correct. I don't want us to be so bad that it happens, but if the perfect storm left us with Cam on the roster and looking good, the 1st pick, and Luck declaring after another stellar season, we would be in the driver's seat.

It's not gonna happen, but it is always fun to speculate.

True, it's not going to happen.

Tell you what, though, how embarassing would it be and how much would you HATE Luck if we were to end up dead last again and he decides...eehh...Panthers again? Think I'll play my senior year.

Watching the re-play now. The white board stuff was a bit disappointing. I thought they were going to ask him about NFL-style plays, but all they asked him to do was draw up an Auburn play.

If you think about it what NFL style plays would he draw up? Its not like he has had the Panthers playbook for the last month or so to learn the plays. All he knows are Auburn plays. If you want him to show where he needs to call out blitzes and defensive coverages then I can see that but IDK how they'd test his ability to call pro style plays.

One thing that I think is encouraging is that Sam Bradford came from a system where he also was given the play from the sideline every time. He seemed to adapt really well. Not saying that Cam is the next Sam Bradford (as far as rookie success) but it does show that its not impossible for a system QB like that to adapt. The key is that he is just going to have to work and that's the bottom line. You gotta work and if he does he'll be great. If he doesn't then he'll be Jamarcus Russell and we'll know sooner than later. This isn't going to be like a 10 year hot and cold experiment. We are going to know if we hit it or not relatively soon after he gets on the field.

This Luck talk is pointless. No way we pick 1st next year. Top-5 MAYBE, but not 1st overall. Not gonna happen.

Why not? We had the worst team in the NFL last season. We currenty don't have a decent QB on the roster. We're also installing a new offense and defense. We're in the deadly NFC South, and there is no promise that Thomas Davis and Otah will ever play another snap. With our current QB situation, I'd say we're the most likely team to pick fist in the 2012 draft. What teams do you think will be picking ahead of us in 2012?

I'm all for being optimistic, but this is a QB driven league, and we have Moore and Clausen. If we draft Cam, he might see the field after we're mathmatically eliminated from the playoffs. Might. Even then, we'd be in worst shape than with pickles imo.

If we bring in a veteran QB, then MAYBE we might beat some of the worst teams on our schedule. That's IF the veteran QB plays above and beyond what's expected. For instance, Palmer is terrible at this point in his career. He's an INT machine with a noodle arm shockingly poor accuracy. Assuming we pick him up, he would have to be on an incredible amount of roids for us to have any chance at beating ANY decent team.

On the positive side, I don't think we'll be blown out by anyone. But we're all just guessing anyway. Maybe we'll have a decent season.

It has nothing to do with being optimistic, it's about being realistic. When's the last time a team picked 1st two years in a row? I think it's very possible we're picking top-5, but not 1st overall. You've got teams like Arizona, Washington, Tennessee, Buffalo, & the 49ers who could easily be worse than us next year.

I just don't see it happening is all. I'd be all for it since, even if we take Cam, we could get a boat load of picks from a team who wants to trade up for Luck, but at the same time it's just not realistic to think something that hasn't happened in over a decade is going to happen to us, toughest schedule or not.

I agree that during his interview he sounds sort of bad but I imagine if we recorded ourselves being interviewed for a job we wouldn't sound to good either. You have to remember that Cam is a young guy and being scrutinized insanely close. he is bound to stutter or screw up an analogy every now and then.

I thought he sounded fine. The biggest thing I take from this whole thing is that Gruden himself said he'd draft him and likes him a lot. As the one asking the questions - even the ones that weren't shown on TV - I'll take that as a good sign.

Exactly even with all of the Huddle criticism Gruden came out of this the most impressed with Cam. One things for certain I don't think Newton hurt himself in this segment to say the least.
