Local Music

I've never seen a local scene with the following a local metal scene can get...

I think, among other things, genre plays a big part of it... No offense to anyone or any musician out there or in this thread, but it is hard to be original and interesting anymore... Look at the movie industry with all their remakes lately... New ideas are hard to come by...

Sure that applies to metal, but most people will go to a metal show just to get in the pit or have a good time thrashing around for a bit... You can only do so much of that (crowd participation, I guess you would call it) with other genres...

I will say that a lot depends on the crowd you're dealing with too... I've been to country shows in Jacksonville near the various military bases, and you'll always have a good bar crowd/folks wanting to dance and stuff... They may not follow that band around the state, but they'll be at that venue every week...

My dad started one of the biggest local beach music/top 40 bands around here a long long time ago, The Central Park Band, and they still exist, over 30 years later (even though he isn't with them anymore)... They have no problem getting the crowd involved or into it, either, nor finding loyal fans that will travel around to hear them...

Again, no offense, but if people genuinely like what you're doing and they have the ability, they will support you...

I've come across some good hip-hop in Raleigh.. regardless of genre though, it's pretty easy to check out local bands around here.

Pour House always has something going on. Lincoln Theater is usually a good scene. Berkely Cafe is another spot that usually hosts local bands.. Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill.

Edit: forgot to mention DIVEbar and Union are some others..

and then you have random spots all over that you stand a good chance to see someone local.

edit:

might as well pimp out friend's of mine and their band..

yeah that is another thing too... a lot of the local hip hop folks support each others' acts... That is something that has happened the past few years, and I take it as a sign that things are moving back into the right direction... maybe it will hit the mainstream and get rid of a lot of the crap currently on it... one can only hope...

I have to agree with Darth and Bleys. In my experience, it seems that Hip Hop or Metal/Hardcore are the main genres that can pull a big local following anymore. I've got a lot of friends in the music industry. (No talent myself :() I've got two friends that have huge followings in the Raleigh rap scene and know a couple of the hardcore bands that draw big crowds in town.

I've also got a couple friends, really good musicians, who have been in the same band for 20+ years, they get gigs around the state, but don't draw a big following because they play beachy jazz. And a really close friend* had his label ask him to move to Germany, because it is too hard for a blues rock guy to break through in the states.

It's a shame that a lot of great bands don't get a chance the way the industry is now.

Edit: Since Bleys did it I will too. *Desmond Myers Music

one thing that would really help local musicians is honesty.

I admit I'm guilty of BSing people about their performances in the past, but I don't do that anymore. If a band sucks, tell them.

if you're ever in Raleigh, let's hit up some shows. I have a friend who usually keeps pulse on what's going on every weekend. You'll appreciate his taste in music.

Will do man, I love to check out new music.

I've played the Divebar, and I'm supposed to be playing Volume 11 later this year, I'll keep you posted

I would like to have a discussion about local music - and people's opinion/thoughts on it.

As a musician myself, I live by the motto "people like what they know, they don't know what they like." This is why cover bands get paid so much more than original bands. Also, because the music industry (especially local markets) are so saturated by mediocre musicians with little talent and potential, it is an ever increasing challenge for bands to break through in their local markets.

Another issue is the market itself - I mean how many people REALLY enjoy a local band regularly? I'm not talking about you going out to a bar and there is a local band playing there and you listened to by proxy, but I'm talking about following a band you found some way or another. Is there even that caliber of music locally, that commands the respect and following of the local music-goers? I believe it's a rare gem to find, when I see a local band that steps on stage and does something that fixates my attention, especially when I'm sober.

With the availability for any Joe Musician to buy a home recording setup for a few hundred bucks, put out a demo and get a gig at Drunky's McBar, local music starves itself out. I admit I've been in bands that haven't drawn anyone besides friends of the band, but that's how it starts...friends tell their friends and things grow. But if you can't hook people with your music or act, which most bands can't, natural selection needs to take a greater role in regulating the scene, which it doesn't seem to do now.

Comments/thoughts?

I'm a musician myself and I know a few local bands. Most of them are complete crap. Charlotte is the home to the gay screamo hard core music. That stuff is absolutely talentless. I'm the group that says if you're bad, you know you're bad, and you shouldn't play.

You can't just jumble notes together and call it a song. I've been refining one of my songs for at least 5 years. I believe in your mind you know whether what you create or not is good enough or has potential. Don't settle for less and make it a crappy song.
