Gruden: Panthers Will Select Newton

TBH Newton might not even be in the mix... My understanding is that JR doesn't want him...

If we don't pick Newton, he could slide to the middle of the first or further... That should tell you a lot...

JR has met with him and it's been said he'd leave the call up to others in the FO. And if we don't pick Newton, two things will happen: we will be laughed at when he succeeds with whatever team he's with, and he will not slide past tenth. Actually he won't go worse than 4th.

I have heard no reports to suggest such. Through the fans eye, Jerry's favorite player is the biggest trouble maker, biggest jerk and the guy who has had the biggest locker room cancer potential. So why doesn't he want a uber talented QB for the weakest position on his team. A single position that can drastically influence the outcome of a season? Why wouldn't Jerry want him?

One thing I did like during the GQBC is the fact that Cam appeared to be taking notes on the film they were watching. If we draft him, I hope he turns into a future SB MVP, but it will definitely take some time for him to learn the plays at the NFL level. When Cam heard him say that play that was 20 words long, Cam was like 36 is our play at Auburn, and simple=fast. That ish doesn't work in the NFL, but he at least seems to have the desire and work-ethic to develop his craft. Plus at the end when he told the guys not to steal 'the swag' and they were laughing it showed that he has an infectious personality. If he can at least get some respect in the huddle, it's a step up. Because right now it looks like Jimmy gets shat on in the huddle. I'm still not sold 100% on him as the pick yet, but I'm getting increasingly more comfortable with it.

There is one thing that trumps game planning every time...

Execution.

We could bring on a PHD in Football Science (if there were such a thing) to play QB for us, who had a photographic memory and could draw on a chalk board, every play from Chud's bible of a playbook from memory.

But if his throwing mechanics have a release that is too low, and his balls get batted down at the line *cough* Jimmy *cough*... then we will never establish a passing game, and never have any success, and lose games.

Newton can execute. We know this.

Some of you are setting yourselves up for a major disappointment... Wanting Newton and only Newton is fine and dandy, but you realize this league takes more than one player to be successful, right?

The only thing possibly more funny to watch than the reaction to us NOT drafting Cam Newton is us actually drafting him and then immediately trading him away to someone else (contingent on a new CBA somewhere in the next 9 days, of course)...

I don't care who we draft... It will be fun to watch the draft regardless... I don't care who our rookies are next season... I just want to win...

Like I said, he will take some time to learn (as any rookie does), but by all accounts I've heard he has the desire to be great. He seems like a bit of a meat head, but in all honesty it's the guy that works the hardest in the weight room and practice and watches film that turns into a winner on Sundays, and the kid seems dedicated to doing that.

Yeah they do.

Unless they get some crazy offer I am sure they know exactly who they want.

I'm not.

When Hurney talks about "the process" and that needing to play out until close to draft day - a sentiment which Rivera parrots - I think he's telling the truth.

And it's valid that no one has really proven to be head-and-shoulders above the rest of the field. so it's not an easy decision.

Serious question for you KT.....

Would you be posting the same stuff if Cam were white?

Sorry MH, had to butt in on this one and answer your question w/another question:

How many Cam "haters" would there be if he were? How many would be questioning his attitude, intelligence, etc? How polarizing would he be among the fans if he were of another persuasion? Put it this way, odds are the bandwagon would have a waiting list if he were (white) and few would question whether the Panthers should take him @ #1. JMHO

As a side note, Darin Gantt was reassigned because McClatchy couldn't afford to have two guys covering the Panthers and no one covering Winthrop, yet this article also credits someone named Ken Tysiac alongside Person.

No, I don't buy into the conspiracy theories and I do believe that the Herald reassigned him for honest reasons (Gantt himself has affirmed that) but I still can't help looking at that and going "hey, waitaminit..."

Setting ourselves up for major disappointment?

Try already being majorly dissapointed.

The only way it could get worse, is if we go 1-15, or 0-16 next year.

Newton is an outlet of hope. Nothing more. If we don't draft him, that hope will be dashed... but the glaring problem we have at QB won't be changed.

And even if we do draft him, I won't be over my current level of disappointment until we are on the positive side of the W-L column (provided we even get to see football this year).

Look back at the The Golden Calf of Bristol discussion last year and you'll have a ready made answer.

I still fully disagree with the pick and will continue to do so until he proves me wrong, but I do think he'll be the first pick. Likely by us.

It's either a trade or Newton, I'm now leaning towards about... 90% chance we take Newton, 9% chance we trade down, 1% chance we take Dareus.

Damn shame, too.. Dareus is going to the Broncos and Fox very happy.
