One-other-scenario-to-ponder-on-Peppers : from YAS

Yeah, I get what you are saying. It's true that a lot of the focus is just getting under the cap, and I guess it could leave us without any more room to sign some of those other key guys.

But I think the Gross deal, if it happens, won't end up costing that much this year. I wouldn't be surprised if his base salary is very low for just this reason.

I think that is probably what has been the hold up with his contract but that new rule that says a players contract can not have a increase of more than 30% from year to year would really make it hard to much. I also think it has been reported that Gross' deal is very top heavy so I'm not sure how much Hurney will be able to save in the first year.

But you are still cutting a starter in Lucas. And that will only allow the Panthers enough cap room to use the tag not the money needed to re-sign King, Hangartner and Jones.

Yas is a complete idiot, so on that I agree with you. But I get the feeling that if this does happen (the Panthers not using the tag) that this fan base is going to explode out of anger. In reality, not using the tag could be the better option. Maybe they know Lucas is already gone no matter what and they also know there is no chance of re-signing King and Hangartner. Then is decision is a lot easier to make. But we as fans don't know this information so I am reserving the need to call for the tag no matter what.

And just to let you know, I want them to use the tag. All I am doing is trying to point out a different view of the situation.

Of the three only Hangartner would be a priority to me. King could be replaced and Jones may not even make the final roster with Robinson and Carter coming off injury reserve.

If you know and understand this concept than so does 31 other GMs and they will use that in order to low ball the Panthers in a trade.

I guess trading him for a 3rd round pick in order for the team to re-sign other players and stay under the cap by the 27th is better than nothing but I doubt that is what most are expecting for compensation for Peppers.

You are right we need to get under to be able to negotiate. Plus don't assume it is slam dunk we will trade him. It is possible we could franchise him and if no good deals come around, keep him. We might believe that his value will increase after the draft or if someone gets injured on IR as the season approaches. I suspect we want to trade him and with all the shenaniggans by his agent, probably pretty quickly. Still I bet Hurney can work it out and still do what we want although it will be pretty tight. We won't be able to keep Peppers and sign any high priced free agents for sure. And I for one what him to go. Still these negotiations have to play themselves out. Remember how Favre tried to negotiate where he would go last year and didn't have the Jets on his list.

Top heavy is probably referring to the signing bonus. The 30% salry rule is total salry incluing the pro-rated signing bonus. So it should be pretty easy to fit into the 30% rule and still only have him count around 6 million this year. That figure would be less than we paid him last year and would make up much half the difference we will have to pay Peppers over the 14 million we paid him last year.

Actually I would just go ahead and cut Lucas (which they're probably planning to do anyway) which would free up enough cap space to franchise Peppers and buy more time for a trade. In fact, after they tag Peppers, I expect there will be multiple cuts made before the 27th to free up space to re-sign other players, etc.

[quote name=' They will also not be able to re-sign players like Jeff King, Goeff Hangartner and Mark Jones or be able to try and sign FAs from other teams that hit the market.

Is getting compensation for Peppers worth potentielly losing maybe upwards of 8 players. Maybe some of the players the would cut anyways and maybe some of the FAs would leave anyways but is it worth it?"[/quote']

king? jones? are you serious???

the value of peppers far exceeds these or any of the other guys. pull your head out of your butt!

this off season isn't about anyone other than gross and peppers. why would we save the tag for anyone else?

PAY GROSS!!! TAG PEPPERS AND TRADE HIS A$$

Wow, really?

Why would we realease him so that he will just sign with one of the four teams he wants and we get nothing?

Might as well trade him to one of them and get something for him, otherwise we will get nothing and have to play him.

Dallas isn't an option, though I wish it were, that would be hilarious. The Redskins don't seem like they can ever do anything, that would be ideal as well.

Releasing him would be the most idiotic move in Franchise history. He will go where he wants, we have to get something for him.

    • Agreed on the last part. They can’t afford to lose all these games with Martin and Perets.
    • Yes.  And this converts directly to confidence.  Does the coach have confidence to call a deep dig or seam route?  Does Bryce have confidence in his ability to be the Alpha?  Do his teammates have confidence.  About film--when I see Cam Newton's pre-snap confidence vs. Bryce's, it is night and day.   Film--tells you if the WRs are open (why l love watching the Replay telecasts from the end zone cameras--you can see it.  I have seen 2 WRs open and Bryce's eyes are on the outlet WR or the pass rush. )  You can see progressions, and he has improved a bit--but he is very quick to rush through 1 and 2 and checkdown--that is a lack of confidence in his ability to read the defense.  I had a former NFL TE (Deems Maye) who played QB in high school (not sure about college) tell me that the best QBs read the defense by knowing where everyone will be when the ball is to arrive--not where they are.  I think his QB at the time was Humphries.  He said that Humphries would throw the ball into coverage before the cuts etc.  because he understood DB momentum, zone areas, etc.  and he could just see it.  Said so when people say nobody was open, they are usually right because nobody should be "open" when the QB has the ball--when the ball arrives, everyone should be open.  He said Humphries was never "great" but his skills were limited--from a small school--but his ability to read a defense made him never give up on a route.
