One-other-scenario-to-ponder-on-Peppers : from YAS

Actually, I do think this is a real option. The Panthers have more players to worry about than just Gross and Peppers. Chances are that the Panthers are going to have to release some players in order to use the franchise tag on Peppers. They will also not be able to re-sign players like Jeff King, Goeff Hangartner and Mark Jones or be able to try and sign FAs from other teams that hit the market.

Is getting compensation for Peppers worth potentielly losing maybe upwards of 8 players. Maybe some of the players the would cut anyways and maybe some of the FAs would leave anyways but is it worth it?

How would you feel if the Panthers cut Lucas and failed to re-sign King Hangartner and Jones and ended up only able to getting a 1st and 4th round pick out of it? That 1st round pick alone isn't going to replace two starters and the 4th round pick alone isn't going to replace two very important backups.

Then by the time they end up coming to a trade agreement all of the FAs will be off the market and the Panthers will be sitting with a number of holes and not enough to patch it up with.

I'm not trying to say that the Panthers should or shouldn't use the tag on Peppers. But their is alot to consider than just "get something for Peppers."

I really don't understand why people think this is a possibility. Why, why, why would they just let him walk when they could tag him and trade him? I don't get it. It makes no sense. None.

For real. It was a waste of whatever energy went into displaying those words on the ESPN website.

I would say it was a waste of the mental energy Yas put into writing it, but it's obvious there was none involved.

Yeah, but that's not what he said. He said we might do it just to save the headache. He did mention the cap room at the very end, but only as another reason to consider doing it.

In any case, I don't think the cap room is that much of an issue. Gamble's bonus, cutting Lucas and restructing Delhomme, along with how we do Gross's contract, should take care of much if not all of it. Gross might cost $9 million or $10 million a year, but that's an average. I seriously doubt he'll cost that much THIS year, given the issue we have with Peppers' tag.

But you are still cutting a starter in Lucas. And that will only allow the Panthers enough cap room to use the tag not the money needed to re-sign King, Hangartner and Jones.

Yas is a complete idiot, so on that I agree with you. But I get the feeling that if this does happen (the Panthers not using the tag) that this fan base is going to explode out of anger. In reality, not using the tag could be the better option. Maybe they know Lucas is already gone no matter what and they also know there is no chance of re-signing King and Hangartner. Then is decision is a lot easier to make. But we as fans don't know this information so I am reserving the need to call for the tag no matter what.

And just to let you know, I want them to use the tag. All I am doing is trying to point out a different view of the situation.

They have until Feb. 27th to get back under the salary cap. So they just need to make the trade after tagging Peppers before then.

Yeah, I get what you are saying. It's true that a lot of the focus is just getting under the cap, and I guess it could leave us without any more room to sign some of those other key guys.

But I think the Gross deal, if it happens, won't end up costing that much this year. I wouldn't be surprised if his base salary is very low for just this reason.

If you know and understand this concept than so does 31 other GMs and they will use that in order to low ball the Panthers in a trade.

I guess trading him for a 3rd round pick in order for the team to re-sign other players and stay under the cap by the 27th is better than nothing but I doubt that is what most are expecting for compensation for Peppers.
