I think if book 4 and 5 could have been combined it would have been a much more satisfying read.

He intended for it to be incredibly complex. That's like complaining that Harry Potter is for children.

not really. it's complicated to the point of watering down the story... the new characters aren't as compelling as the previous and any concept of overarching narrative is being lost in his continued push to one-up every previous twist and turn.

If i were complaining about how fantasy was stupid and how this story would be great if it was set in late 19th century russia; THAT would be like complaining that Harry Potter is for children.

It's not bad... just meh. I read all of them. I enjoyed them. I just don't know that I'd pick up the next one, guess it depends if I can still remember the insignificant intricacies of the story in 5-10 years when the next one comes out.

I can feel you on that sentiment, mmmbeans... I even agree to an extent, but I think once the series fleshes out into completion it will all be worth it...

I'm rewatching the series lately, and lol @ all the possibilities that could still happen in the books...

Don't read any further if you don't want to be spoiled on anything in the future...

WHAT IF:

Eddard Stark was an accomplished warg, unbeknownst to all (even though it runs through all his children apparently), and warged himself into a passing bird, or even Hodor all the way back in Winterfell... and thus, never died...

Varys = Eddard Stark - As an accomplished Faceless Man/Sorcerer, unbeknownst to everyone, both are one and the same... The guy that was decapitated was just some dude he used Glamor on... He'll now be heading toward the ultimate battle against Littlefinger...

Eddard didn't die!!!!!1111ONE

I'm not sure I've ever found any of the characters as compelling as the complexity of the story itself. No parts are greater than the whole to me.

As far as insignificant intricacies...there are none. You simply desire an abridged version.

That's what HBO is working on now.

Honestly, I don't expect to be able to have this conversation with you since you think Martin is one of the greatest writers ever.

complexity isn't a measure of quality. Sometimes it makes stories better, sometimes it simply makes them more complicated and more prone to breaking (more moving parts.) For the first 3 books I think the former was true, with the last two, I think it's the latter. I don't know what "no parts are greater than the whole" means in relation to a critique of story structure.

I just read about 7000 pages of a story that has literally gotten further away from resolution with every book. I don't need an abridged version, Martin needs an editor.

I just started "Dragons" so there may be someone I dont know about yet, but seems to me that Lyn Corbray is the baddest knight in the kingdom, but I like to think the old man Selmy is still the best.

Targaryans are my favorite house by far, but I like the Boltons too, cause they're evil and poo.

Arthur Dayne was, or at least one of the top 2 or 3 knights. A member of Aerys' kingsguard. They have a very cool house and one of them at a time gets to carry their family sword which is made out of a meteor.

Ned kills Arthur though, so he I guess won't be in the show cause it would have to be a flashback.

One of the Dayne's is potentially Jon Snow's mother.

What are you reading that is 7000 pages?

I understand your frustrations, really... I do...

Personally, I liked all the minor details... I guess it is just the differences in the reader... I don't know of any inconsistencies in the writing either, so I don't know that he'll hang himself or leave himself with some obscure difference or something...

I disagree that he needs an editor too... He does just fine IMHO...

The biggest argument I think you're giving is that he goes into too much detail... You see it as annoying, but I see it as world-building to the smallest of details... It is about immersion, to me...

I want to go out and get the Dunk and Egg novellas now, just to read up on more history of Westeros... lol

i only find it annoying as i don't see the story taking shape... It continues to get longer and longer, more and more nebulous. I don't have a problem with tons of detail and long drawn out books, I read Frank Herbert and PK Dick.

I feel sorta like a little kid whose grandfather was telling this great story but he's getting drunker and drunker as the evening goes on... now I'm 3 hours into this story and he's just rambling, and I'm pretty sure I know how it ends and I'm waiting for him to start tying it up but he just keeps going.

Again, glad I read the books. Very enjoyable, one of the best fantasy series I've ever read. Will I finish it when the time comes? Maybe.
