The Rome producers are going to have a new show that covers 80 fuging years. Unless it lasts 8 seasons, that's not gonna work.

I just finished the second book and wow! I need to catch up on the show though. What's going to happen when they run out of book and martin hasn't finished anymore? I don't think you can put a multiyear pause on a series? Will martin write the episodes before the books? Or did I just miss something?

Well, season 2 probably won't air until next April or so... then one can assume season 3 will air late 2012/early 2013, season 4 early 2013/early 2014... the fifth book comes out next month, so that will push it to beyond 2014 to get caught up with the series.

Surely, book 6 won't take so long to get published as 4 and 5 did, but even if it does, it might be right in time to get that season on TV...

Keep in mind also that only a second season has been signed up for... even a third is no guarantee at this point... One can only hope...
