I doubt they have much experience at making swords that big.  Plus, if he unfamiliar with its use, might be a danger to his own troops. 

 

Personally, I would have used him as a reserve, or part of a team of shock troops, to send in just as the battle is reaching its peek.  Imagine him and the Bear Island Knights charging at a specific point while the rest of the group was surrounded.  They could easily break thru Bolton lines to relieve them, similar to the way the Knights of the Vale did, albeit on a much smaller scale.

sansa was a victim of rape and abusive now lady of winterfell.

bran was training now is the three eyed raven. 

Boltons are defeated

sam is at oldtown

rickon died

tyrion is now hand of the queen

 

 

Literally all this happened this past season. I feel like most people who watch shows like this don't understand you need raising action to make payoffs and climaxes meaningful. 

 

You needed to build up to the red wedding, you needed to build up to  negan. 

 

Filler is a term used by viewers you aren't watching shows for  nuance or complexity.  They are watching for purely spectacle so when spectacle doesn't happen every single episode they write it off as filler.
