slower revolution? odd orbit pattern? it can be explained plenty of ways scientifically...

I think it is just something to set the world apart... kinda like nuances like calling it a "name day" instead of a birthday...

there are places on Earth where seasons last a long time... heck, even Antarctica used to be moderate temperature aeons ago...

I actually think it was a cop out so he didn't have to deal with seasons in a series that ran over the course of a decade internally.

Just makes it so much easier to write and focus on characters, exposition and story arcs.

But yeah, I always assumed the axis tipped farther than our own planet, and slower too.

apparently you didn't get my "taking the black" as a euphemism thing...

I'm comfortable enough with my own sexuality that I don't care about the cock shots or the implied homosexual parts... I'm too busy looking at the tits to really care...

Stuff like that just adds to the grit and realism for me.

But those things would create repeating patterns of time. It seems that the characters have no idea how long the current season will last or when the next winter will come and how long it will last.

From what I remember of the first book GRRM has decades if not centuries of history for the land and his characters so it seems unlikely that they wouldn't have a history to use to predict the changing of the seasons.

Not trying to nitpick an otherwise enjoyable show I was just curious if that was a detail that was explained in the books but was left out of the TV adaptation.

Maybe that's a difference in the SciFi nerds and the Fantasy geeks. Something like this just gnaws at me when the mention a winter that lasts 9 years.

technically the orbit/wobble/tilt could all be enough that no discernible pattern may be evident to them at the current state of their existence...

keep in mind this is medieval fantasy, so their technology would be on about the same level as real world counterparts during that era... they still explain things as omens and magic, and I haven't seen any evidence in my readings that would make me think they really care about seasons other than winter being harsh and seemingly never ending...

Sci-Fi is the same in regards to world development sometimes... some people would think that life would not be possible on a planet in a binary solar system, but Tatooine had no problem...

Well there is all that jive about R'hllor and the Great Other.

I think it depends on the fan, really... not the genre...

I know some people that play fantasy games that couldn't care less about the world they are in, and just want to kill stuff/other people... I also know the opposite... the kind of person that takes an interest in the lore to the extreme...
