Chizik: Newton won't disappoint Panthers if they pick him No. 1

Wait, you mean to tell me his college coach thinks he can play in the NFL? That is unheard of! Seriously, I've never heard a college coach ever publicly lobby for a guy they coached. Can you imagine if every coach ever did that? How would we ever know who to believe? Next you'll tell me that his dad thinks he is really good too, that would just be the icing on the cake. His dad's a preacher so you know he's going to tell the truth. Or wait, maybe his personal mentor will praise how good/mature he is. Or maybe his agent will say that he thinks that he should go #1. I wonder how his girlfriend feels about his chances?

Pretty much

His coach may or may not be right, but to accept his viewpoint as objective is rather naive.

Neither will Dareus, Peterson, or AJ Green....

Actually, any one of them could. So could Newton.

(or Gabbert, or Mallettt, or Fairley, or...)

You know, sometimes, you just can't measure 'want to'.

I think this guy 'wants to', in the worst way.

His ego will be either his best friend or his worst enemy, moreso than learning NFL jargon.

I've tried not to like Newton, but he has star quality in him, a presence. It's hard not to like that. I just can't see him being a failure. He may or may not reach great heights, that's up to him and his attitude about work; but, there is no question to me, that if he had that NFL jargon, if he gets the white board, he will be at least a good NFL QB and that's a helluva lot better than we have now.

Its depressing how bad this draft is. Its also depressing that in 2 years we are still going to be waiting on either Blaine Gabbert or Cam Newton to turn into a pro QB while whoever has #1 next year will have a ready-made NFL starter in Andrew Luck.

I love how Newton has been a winner all of his career and I love how Gabbert seems to have the arm, the size, pretty much everything you'd want. But do either of them have a brain that is going to be able to comprehend the NFL game quickly? Cam Newton basically looked at Jon Gruden and said "I have no clue what you're talking about" when Gruden asked him to call a play from Auburn. That is at the very least a concern and at worst a huge red flag that says he is nowhere near a professional QB.

Gabbert on the otherhand looked like a slacker during his workout and Gruden didn't quiz him on the game like he did with Newton but who knows?? I heard he did well with the scheming in the meetings but that could just be rumor.

    • Yeah the thing about DJ and his production was that he played in a scheme that either rushed 6 or rushed 3. Almost nothing in between.  So he's either 1 on 1 or a free rusher OR he's not rushing at all.  That said, he cost very little compared to Burns with basically the same output.
    • There's much of nothing coming out this time of year, but here's a vid that I believe that many fans need to internalize because it speaks to expectations for the 2024 season.    There's nothing really new, but I'd like to point out that one of the few things that I personally learned is that D.J. Wonnum's contract is only guaranteed to the tune of 10 percent. The analyst in the vid is a Vikings guy, and he has seen all of  Wonnum's plays. He says that Wonnum disappears for big stretches, and of course, as a Panthers guy, I couldn't help but think of Brian Burns' disappearing act for stretches as well.  To paraphrase and kind of give my two cents, Panthers fans should be somewhat optimistic about all of the potential on offense (but not crazily so), and be somewhat worried about the pass rush and defensive backfield. We're thin at both, but hopefully we can at least be competitive based on the offensive side of the ball. This is not to say that we won't be better on defense, but being so thin at rush and on the back end, we will be lucky to substantially improve.  One more note is that I believe he's somewhat of a Young apologist, as he didn't really mention Bryce's bad play specifically, taking the position that we just don't know what we have in Young based upon the sh¡t show in 2023.  I could argue the point, but what's the point? We'll have to see what Bryce has got when surrounded by much-improved talent and coaching. Check the vid out; it isn't so long, and though there are multiple reasons to be skeptical about the defensive personnel, last year produced a couple of stats that should indicate that Ej knows what he's doing. Like the analyst said, we'll hopefully do for the defense in the 2025 off-season, what we did for the offense this off-season.
    • seems like Necas is acting like a pestilent spoiled brat, we have to sign Drury and this is gumming up the works - also looks like we now have to trade Necas for draft picks or fingers crossed get out of KK's salary
