Gruden's extended QB Camp w/ Newton (drills included)

I still dont get this mindset......... So because Cam wont be able to contribute in his first season - people want to pass for that reason alone because we are picking at #1 vs somewhere else early in the first  Its not like the Panthers long term QB situation is going to get any better by passing on him :confused5: OH... thats right.... the guy we pick in next years draft will be ready to start right away and be better, sorry I forget that

You could say the same thing about jimmy clausen.

Just saying.

you can basically boil every newton thread down to this:

1) people who think he looks great, looks ready, looks awesome

2) people who hate him, think everything he says is wrong or whatever

3) people who don't care that much but like picking apart group #1 or #2.

there is so little middle ground with him it's crazy.

I was looking for a comment to quote but really didn't see one I wanted so I will just say this.

Jimmy Clausen came from a school that isn't known for their dumb jocks. JC came from top college football program, and a pretty solid talent (or thought to be) with the previous knowledge of the "PRO" System. I thought JC would be on the field in a matter of weeks and take the Panthers into the post Jake Delhomme era. While I still believe he CAN be an NFL QB. The argument is can Cam learn our system. We had a QB that for 4 years was groomed under a pro-style offense and yet it really didn't amount to anything.

I also think too many people think we are going to take Cam and have him under center when opening day comes. I don't care whether we have Post Draft Camp, OTAs Mini-camps and pre-season for Cam to get ready. HE WILL NOT START in 2011. The chances are he won't play at all or if he does it will be in mop up duty. He will be given the time to learn the lingo and learn the plays.

One thing everyone seems to make note of is 36. No one takes note in the fact that he said Auburn plays fast. Remember Play fast. You have no clue what 36 meant. It could have been more complex than a bunch of fancy calls. Just because he said 36 doesn't meant that each player didn't have a specific route to run. You still have to know where everyone lines up, every route and everyones job assignment. You also don't know if there were 30 or 40 different numbers they use. Play fast... use a number plays fast.

Just because the play doesn't sound confusing doesn't mean the play is simplistic.

He is too good of a talent to pass on. He will have time to learn the LINGO and be a great QB.

I'm definitely going to watch this thing tomorrow. I'm pretty sure Cam meant well when he made that gun reference, he was just trying to tell Gruden how he uses criticism and hatred as motivation. I almost can't believe that the draft is next Thursday...

The simplicity of the offense was pretty concerning as was his diction he was really trying way too hard with that whole "gun" thing. Didn't make him look too eloquent or well spoken.

His physical traits don't concern me at all, he needs smarts way more than speed/strength.

I started to use this as knock on him becoming a great NFL QB... then I thought about Vick and Roethlisberger.

Nor do i care as much as some how he does on the white board.

So you don't care if your teams QB knows how to diagnose a play? Umm, OK.

For the record, I didn't think he did too bad on the white board. But, if you don't care how a QB prospect does on a white board then you clearly don't know very much about how the QB position works.

Yeah, I want to draft Cam, but i wasn't a fan of the answer. Sounded a lot like LeBron James.

I'd rather him be motivated intrinsically. Not worry about the haters, just wanting to be great.

Really? Tom Brady has said the same thing several times. As have MANY players in the NFL who were doubted coming into the league. I have no problem with that. And I don't really get the problems with the gun reference. It wasn't awkward at all until Gruden asked him to repeat it so they could get a better soundbyte to pick apart on Sportscenter for the next week.

I'm as high on him as ever after watching this. His passes looked great. I also don't get why everyone is so surprised by the fact Auburn has a simple offense. We all knew that from day one. It's no secret. I suppose it all comes down to whether or not you believe he is capable of learning the NFL schemes, which I do. Not being asked to do something and not being able to are two totally different things.
