Gruden's extended QB Camp w/ Newton (drills included)

The overall feeling I got from him was that he's definitely hard working and competitive. One of the things that turned me off about Clausen this season is when he was asked about our poor start and said something like "It doesn't bother me, my first year at Notre Dame started off bad too" That just irked the hell out of me.

When talking Newton seemed comfortable and was able to keep up with Gruden and hang in there UNTIL he was asked about calling an Auburn play and honestly it looked like a guy at a job interview who got asked about something he lied about on his resume "Aww man you're putting me on the spot...*blank state*" He literally did not know what to say. It wasn't a shining moment for him.

Other than that he was pretty good in the sit down portion. He drew up a play for Gruden and to my highly untrained eyes it looked and sounded good and Gruden seemed to accept it so thats all I need. On the field he was pretty impressive he took snaps in an "under center" situation and did well, but its a big difference between getting a snap from a guy on the ground and from a 300 lbs guys crotch. I'm going to watch it again tomorrow and try to supplement some more specifics..

Sit Down Interview- C+

On the Field- A

Overall- B-

I like Cam but I wasn't really impressed with the interview...someone mentioned earlier that he looked intimidated by Gruden and that was right on the money. He seemed nervous and unsure of himself at times. The most uncomfortable part was when gruden mentioned the kneel down at the end of the NC game. Cam honestly didn't have an answer for why he did it...at least not a legitimate one. He does seem like a good kid who gets caught up in bad situations, he's confident but not cocky, and he seems to really want to get better.

Overall I'd give it a C-....he may have a high ceiling but he is going to start off so low it will be almost impossible for him to adjust anytime next year.

I just watched the interview and found nothing to dissuade me from wanting him as our first pick. What I saw was an honest kid talking with Gruden and trying to do the best he can to keep up with an NFL offensive guru. There are some rough areas that he has to work on, and play recognition and the Panthers terminology will have to be uppermost as he makes the transition. But if you consider this is his third system in as many years, none of which were NFL style offenses, it is not unexpected to find a lack of understanding of the concepts. But as long as he picks things up quickly and has a good teacher, he should progress quickly. Assuming he has all the physical tools and he is willing to watch film, put in the time, and benefit by coaching by improving each time he goes out on the field. Not always by performing well, but learning to adapt and find a way to win. I like that he is a fighter and a competitor. That kinf of fire is needed in your leader.

The problem with Jake was that he didn't really have the physical skills but had great intangibles. His poor decisions were really okay ideas executed poorly. What we need is a guy who has the same intangibles and better physical skills who can actually execute the play. Unfortunately, he won't get the luxury of hanging around on the edges picking things up and practicing with little pressure or expectations like Jake did. Instead, he will step into a fishbowl with all eyes turned in his direction expecting instant results.

It really does set him up for failure if he is pressed into service too early and doesn't get time to learn the game before he is called upon to execute it. I like what they did with The Golden Calf of Bristol, working him into the offense late in the year. If you want Newton you have to be find with him sitting on the bench. That means Clausen or Moore, Pike, and a vet yet to be named have to play well this year so we get to forget that Newton is even there. Maybe he comes in on a redzone package, third and short, in a version of the wildcat where the runner can actually throw the ball, pitch it, run it or hand it off. If he is pressed into service I will say the same thing I did last year when Clausen came in which was that means our supposed starters are sucking, we are likely losing, and are in a world of hurt. I hope it doesn't come to that this year. I want whoever is starting to be a veteran not a rookie who has the understanding to grasp Chud's playbook and can read defenses and coverages. I hope that Moore or Clausen can show up big but don't want to pin my hopes to them after last year.

A new system and terminology for everyone. Hopefully these coaches are great teachers and many being former players, they understand how to best communicate what they learned by playing the game. I am still holding out for a veteran but don't have a clue who that should be. I seem to be ascribing to the "find a solution by all possible means to insure the greatest chance for success" school of thought. Some may say desperate, after last year.......perhaps. Maybe just not willing to go quietly into the night again like last year. I want us to find the franchise guy and want to explore every possibility until we do. I f we find him for the next decade, it will have been worth the price. If we don't, then look at the possibilities for next year. Sooner or later we will hit gold. I just think we will hit it this year although it will take time to refine and polish it. But the finished product is worth the time and effort exerted to create it.

I think my 2 favorite parts were a subtle (most likely untentional) jab at The Golden Calf of Bristol... When Gruden asked how his vertical jump would help him in the NFL Cam said "Yeah, what am i going to do? a Jump Pass?"

And also, the way Cam laughed at the possibility of Gabbert going ahead of him in the draft.

Cam is definitely a far cry from being humble... but I do not necessarily think that is a bad thing when you are supposed to be a franchise QB in this league. You need to have that "swag." And don't try to steal that... Cam has it copy written.

In fairness, probably most people would be a little intimidated by Gruden, especially a kid his age that's being grilled.

Gruden's kind of intense.

Yeah, but that isn't a good excuse. I'm sure JR is good an intimidating folks too. What happens when Smitty starts grilling him when he is struggling to get him the ball?
