Trading the pick after Newton is selected...

I am starting to think the panthers will not trade away the first pick, but they may trade away cam newton. The way I see it, cam's draft position is in great dispute. Some say number 1, some say number 15. This leads me to believe that GM's around the league will not want to trade for the first pick if they feel there is a slightest chance Newton would drop to their draft position for free.

Therefore, if the Panthers do select Newton number one, That is the moment Hurney's war room phone will begin to really light up. It would not shock me to see Cam traded half an hour after his selection.

Not much of a gamble on the Panthers part. It's a win-win for them. They either have a talented prospect at QB who will sell tickets immediately, or they gain back their second rounder and an extra first next season (and let's face it, any of the teams drooling over cam may be the first pick next season....hello andrew luck)

Love,

Zod

I thought that couldn't be done without a CBA:

"(Player trades) cannot happen this year due to the work stoppage rules," Aiello wrote in an email. "A trade right now must be draft pick for draft pick. Once a pick is made, as in the Rivers-Manning scenario, the player cannot be traded this year. No player transactions are currently permitted."

Ok, never mind...... Lol

Wow that sucks for us. Although, one might argue that as there is not a signed contract between the club and the player, you are not trading a player but trading away your rights to sign that player. A small difference, but an important one.

I nearly suggested that in another post but was not sure about the RIGHTS to a player. Regardless, his value would be determined by the CBA and the rookie scale. However, this is an interesting strategy because we would keep him until we felt better about his work ethic and knew where we stood in free agency. Heck, if we go 1-15 and draft Luck, I imagine we would get a boat load of picks in 2012 for Newton, if he shows signs of being good.

I just wonder what would be wrong with Newton as a Panther. Panther fans need something to be excited about.

We have many needs and there are many QBs from which to choose--in the 2011 draft, 2012 draft, trades, free agency, etc. If so many are against Cam, and we all want to win, why assume Cam is the answer? THere is more about his game that is unknown than known. Unless you are a psychic, there are wiser strategies.

First, why pay a franchise QB to come in and learn in December what he normally would have learned in pre-season?

A CB or DT could play right NOW, without camps and preseason.

If we draft a QB in 2011 or 2012, he will not start until 2012-barring a miracle.

So why not go after the other needs who will not be as impacted by the CBA crap?

Do you think we are Super Bowl bound in 2011 with a QB who didn't see the playbook until August or September? A PROJECT QB? Considering most third rounders do not start in the NFL, how did we get better?

I agree that Cam is the media darling and his celebrity would fill seats and create excitement-for a brief while.

There are other options. Go back to your Cam Shrine and light another candle; your muted rage will pass. Exploring all options, hypothetical or practical, is what makes this interesting. What forums are for. Nonetheless, I admire your loyalty and the manner in which you honor a silly bet.

I think we take Cam if we stick at #1. However, if we get the first pick in 2012, do not expect Luck to become a Bengal or Viking. WHile Cam has pro-bowl POTENTIAL, Luck has HALL OF FAME potential. Signs of being good should not reserve you a spot in Canton. Upgrade at QB whenever you can.
