Death of the Daytime Soap

How many of you have a mom, sister or significant other who's a soap addict?

Well, they're about to have two less sources of addiction.

Saw a headline in USA Today indicating that ABC is cancelling two long running daytime dramas, "All My Children" and "One Life to Live".

I couldn't tell you jack about either one other than that Susan Lucci was on the first one. Still, I think it's significant because when I look to the horizon, I see the end of an era.

When I was a kid, there were ten to twelve different soaps airing on the major networks between Noon and 4pm weekdays, and they were the hottest thing going. So popular in fact were the daytime soaps that they gave birth to prime time phenomenons like Dallas, Dynasty and Falcon Crest.

My mom was a big "Guiding Light" fan. Looking at the listings, I see that's not on anymore; no idea when it left. My sister liked "The Young and the Restless". I didn't take much interest in either, except for a time in my teens when I saw a commercial advertising that one of the characters on my sister's soap was becoming a stripper on the show, and then suddenly I was very interested

In years since, it seems like half the women I've dated have been "Days of our Lives" fans. Said women have also been crazy (not sure if there's a correlation or not) :sosp:

As of right now, there are only six daily soaps still going. Once the ax falls on these others, there'll be only four, and from what I've read even some of the ones that are left are in danger of cancellation at some point.

Not a soap fan myself (though I've dated some bona fide fanatics) but even so, I find myself wondering what killed 'em.

Man card now.

Aaaahhh, bite me, rat boy :prrr:

I'd be willing to bet half the men on here, while they may have no interest in the soaps themselves, have done their fair share of ogling soap actresses while their wives were watching to find out "whose baby it was" or "whether Trevor survived" or whatever.

I think it's interesting that the soap era is coming to an end, anyway. So phooey on you :sosp:

I think the issue has been happening for a while now, and that's that less women are staying home now. That was their target audience, obviously. Women are either, going out to work cause they are more independent or going to work because most married couples have to both work nowadays. I don't think people have the time they once did to put into these shows. I think people would also rather watch a court show (Judge Judy) now. They had a long run though, but it all comes to an end.
