The safe pick isn't a good idea - great article

Take Ryan's name off and replace it with Redman and tell me they wouldn't be fighting with us for last place in the division.

Understand your point.

However, if you took Turner's name off and replaced it with their other RB's, you could make the same analogy.

Bottom line is that the Falcons Offense has been able to pair a very good QB with a very good RB.

We are the QB aways from being a good offense.

The question is whether Newton or Gabbert are that "franchse guy" like Ryan was.

There was NO question that Ryan was a top flight QB coming out of college....unlike the MANY, MANY question marks about whether Gabbert or Newton will transition the same way.

Is this article seriously comparing drafting Cam Newton with drafting Matt Ryan or Sam Bradford? If either of those two were in the draft this year, we wouldn't even know there was someone in the draft named Gabbert, much less tossed his name in the ring as a possible #1 overall pick.

They're were questions about Ryan/Bradford too lets not forgot. It's easy to state what you're saying after watching there production as pros but I remember hearing how Bradford could be gimpy/fragile and Ryan was called a reach to fill the void of losing Vick. Nobody knows how these prospects will turn out talent is talent though you have to take a chance on it if you have that need.

Also cosign TRD 100% on the Turner/Ryan sh1t...

I don't recall ANYONE saying that the Falcons were reaching by taking Ryan. If memory serves me correctly, there was speculation of many teams trading up to get him.

thats fine and all, but the key to beating the Falcons last year was to stop Turner and force Ryan to beat you with his arm. Sometimes he can, sometimes he can't... He needs help, just like the vast majority of QBs.

Their offense isn't set up like that though. They're built to grind out games and wind-down the clock with the running game. Ryan is outstanding on 3rd downs and in the 4th quarter though. Extremely clutch.

You are giving Turner way too little credit.

Turner makes that team go.

But the Falcons have a better QB, better ground game, better WRs, better defense, etc

Clayton just wants to make a point and he ignored all other factors and said the pick didn't pay off the for the Dolphins.

I also think it's too early to tell but who knows.

Turner got a ding b/c of his health in 09.

IMO, there's no safe pick in this draft for the #1overall. We don't know who will be succesful and who won't. You can draft a "sure-fire" and he could end up like Ki-Jana Carter. You can a get a 5th and get a Tom Brady. I think there are a few QB's in this class that will suprise us Newton,Mallet,Ponder,McElroy are my guesses.

Although he was rated number 1 I remember some draft experts saying it about him around that time.

Didn't they miss the playoffs that year?

Coincidentally that was Ryan's worst year as well. Hmmmmmmmmmmm

Falcons still went 9-7 that year.....If Ryan had missed similar time and Turner was healthy they would not have sniffed that.
