engagement rings

Just remember, this is THE RING she'll wear forever. My wife is one of the least materialistic people I have ever met, but going big on the diamond was one of the smartest things I've ever done.

Don't get wrapped up in the cost, just do it for her. These rings are a ridiculous source of pride for them.

Yea, thats what I tho. I'm looking for about .66-.72 carat diamond... I don't think it's to bad...

Anyone ever bought from Diamonds Direct? If so do you feel you got a good deal?

When I actually price compared with other jewelers for similar rings they were way higher. Like 1-2K. Figured the ads were sales bullshit, but I didn't realize they would be that much higher..

My wife was a jeweler years ago and her main concern for her ring was clarity.

I got her a smaller diamond but with the best clarity possible and she loves it.

I think it's more about what she wants than what a commercial or another person thinks is the right size/amount of $$ to spend.

I'd worry more about how it looks on her over the price etc. When I got engaged to my current wife, I told her the sky was the limit. We looked at some pretty fantastic rings, but in the end, we got one that really wasn't that expensive but fit her hand and her active lifestyle. She loves it and even though I've offered her much bigger ones since, she's happy with it. I did buy her a fantastic 10 year band though.

I'm looking for a diamond around $3,800 and platinum band for about $1,600. I found a very good place, interest free for a year in Minneapolis. My brother in law got my sister ring there. I will take a trip up to Minneapolis in a month or so.

Rather than start a whole new thread on the subject, I thought I'd ask this here: What the hell is a promise ring?

It's a ring that indicates you intend to marry someone some day. How is that different than an engagement ring? Don't people get engaged and not get married for several years already?

And isn't that an awkward conversation?

"I want to give you this ring!"

"YES!!! I will marry you!"

"Whoa! Wait a minutes honey. This is a promise ring. Not an engagement ring."

"So what does that mean?"

"It means I want to be with you for a long time."

"And marry me?"

"Eh...maaaaaybe. It's like I want to be with you, but I don't want to pigeon hole myself into the whole marriage thing."

"So you don't want to marry me?"

"I wouldn't say that. Odds are, I will marry you...eventually. But I'm not sure I want to guarantee that yet."

"So this isn't really a promise, it's just a ring."

"Damn nice one too! Got it at Wal Mart."

My sober suggestion. Worry more about color than anything else.

I say color, cut, clarity are the key.........karat size is not as important. You can get a women less than 1 karat and it be a lot nicer ring than some that are over 1 karat. Chicks want a ring that looks good.....a good cut goes a long way.
