Trade down Possibilty

1. Do they think a QB in a year that could not have OTAs, Training Camp, or a preseason is a smart pick?

NO i do not think so. Drafting a project and then not being able to spend optimal time or caring to (JimmY) is foolish. A first overall pick QB is unable to sit on the bench for any amount of time. Pressure to put them on the field is stupendous.

2. Do they think there are franchise QBs in the draft?

The Franchise QB question. Wow, i think it basically boils down to other questions. Are we willing to tie ourselves to this guy and either ascend or FAIL? Is this guy gonna bring in fans?

3. Is Steve Smith wanting out?

Yes and no. I actually think a Cam Newton drafting could keep him here.

4. Do they think he has an adverse effect on developing young QB talent?

I do think a young corp with a legit number 1 would be more beneficial than a unhappy vet. I also back Green or bringing in a top dollar guy like VJax.

5. Is DT the biggest need?

Quite possibly. We merely had warm bodies minding the middle last year.

6. Will the quality DTs be gone by the 65th pick?

I don't think so. I have several guys i like that are later round guys. Jarvis Jenkins, Drake Nevis, Sione Fua, Jurrell Casey and Ian Williams.

I am telling you now if we can be big players in FA and grab up Alex Smith, Vincent Jackson and a legit DT our needs would be met. Opening us up to taking best player available or trading down.

I agree with you on about every point. I would like to add a comment to your DT observation. I think we found a couple rotational DTs in Landri and Neblett. Neblett was less obvious, but at the end of the year, he played lights out vs. Pittsburgh and their rookie sensation C Pouncey. I think we could use a pair of starters still, but the depth is set, IMO.

Here is a radical idea. What if we traded down with someone like Washington for a first and second rounder next year? Sounds crazy. However, to piggyback on your free agency comments, along with our "cap" room, we could sign three veterans and retail our core players (I see DW leaving and SS wanting a trade).

Why would we do that? First, we get picks next year when we know we will have OTAs, training camp, pre season, etc. We have another year to evaluate our youth, and we do not get raw materials to mold just before kickoff. Maybe this is JR's vision.

We add three veterans--a QB, a DT, and a WR, for example. We draft CB, OL, and DL. Then next year we have 2 firsts and 2 seconds. Regardless of where we finish, we can move up for a franchise QB (with time in the off season to develop) with 2 first rounders to deal. Luck, Landry Jones, etc. will be there. If we find the answer at QB, we have 2 first rounders and 2 second rounders and a rookie pay scale.

To me, that is smarter than drafting a QB project first overall that you might not be able to talk to for four months. Trade for next year's picks (teams more willing to trade with us), drop 8-12 spots, and l think you make a wiser decision about your long term success.

intresting but, falling to 12 means no elite players are on the board. Gabbert won't make it out of the top 5. with the palmer saga going on i don't see how they(cin) say we don't need a qb. also the cardinals would love to have gabby. Fairley falls to 12? i dout it. brandon harris is going to be first rounder.

Exactly why trading down, unless it's just an insane deal we can't pass up (like two additional 1st rounders or something crazy no team has ever offered before), we don't need to trade down.

As long as we are #1, we dictate who goes to us. It's a position of strength we don't need to just throw away.

Wow... We get a trade down and we take the player mick eye personally wants?

I expected a different result when I entered this thread

Didn't you know? Thats how it works. You trade down but the player you want is guaranteed to still be available when you pick.

Ok feel i have to defend myself for whatever reason. The fact is i do not have a PERSONAL PICK. I am not invested in Cam or any other particular player. A trade down gives us flexibility. When i say Fairley could be there at 12 it is because he could. Also Prince Amukumara could also be there. Jon Baldwin is a WR that would fit the Chud and Shula prototype of a number 1 WR. Guess what he could be there at the Vikings 2nd round pick. At the top of the second we have a legit chance at talent at needs we have. Our team needs more than a face of the franchise one year wonder. We need a legit upgrade at DT and CB also.
