i read the novel. yeah the twist is great

I went out and got the book because of what you said here. As much as I enjoyed the movies I did not know it was all based from a book and I enjoyed the book more than all the movies. I also thought the twist at the end was great.

actually, i think this is supposed to be a 'pre-quel' explaining how the apes came to be what they are in the originals

Well, it's basically rebooting from Rise of the Apes, which is the 4th or 5th of the originals and tells the same story. If I remember, the smart apes actually came from the offspring of the two chimp doctors that were brought back in time in the 3rd (?) movie, but they should scrap that.

just go back and look at the first original 4. POTA is the first obviously. Return of POTA is 2nd then Escape(this is where the apes get back to modern Earth) and then Conquest(which is similar to Rise).

I hope I got that right.

Looks cool from the trailer, but I'm interested to see how they make the leap to defeating mankind. While watching the trailer it occurred to me that it looks like they're fighting a police force. Where's the military? Those gorillas wouldn't be as scary from inside a Bradley behind the bushmaster...

Nukes must get involved somewhere.

Yep. Most people don't realize that, among mammals, humans are one of the most numerous. It's just not something you really think about. World ape populations are generally estimated to be under one million. Like most other species, by the present time when this films takes place us humans have already won the numbers war.

So again, nukes have the get involved somewhere. It could also tie into (or joke at) the surviving human cult that worships the nuke in the later film.

The movie was damn good. It far exceeded my expectations and is one of my favorite movies of the summer. What sold it to me was I got very invested in Caesar (the main ape) early in the movie. The motion capture actor who played Caesar was really good (same guy who played Golum in the lord of the rings and King Kong). Worth the money IMO.
