yeah B. i don't look for any of that new road to be here anytime soon. They actually started that leg of 140 that I need? the part that will connect 74/17 to where it ends on 421? i could be at work in 10 minutes with that I bet.

Um, no... they're doing the south leg first... from 17 to 74/76.

I think it's because of the long bridge they'll have to build over the upper Cape Fear north of Leland.

this is dumb. there are only 4 lanes crossing the river from brunswick to new hanover, and we need more. 17 and 74 are already connected by 87, 211 and mt. misery, and they merge to one another. i'm positive that people living off 17 would rather have another bridge in lieu of another road connecting them to a road that doesn't even have that much on it.

Hey no on ever said that the NCDOT was smart...

I suspect that they don't have the money to complete that bridge north of Leland, so they're starting on the other leg first.

bridges ARE expensive. site i just looked at says the south leg is more shovel ready, and was given funds for that reason. it also says the entire 27 miles should be open in 2015. so i'll look for it 2025 if i'm still in leland. i hope I'm not.

Yeah, that's what I thought... I found some PDF's of the whole thing on the DOT website about 2.5 years ago and I actually printed them and taped them to the wall because I wanted to see where they were going with it. That bridge over the Cape Fear north of Leland is very long... they have to go over a long way... it's just as long as the other bridge...

it's not like building it is going to be cheaper in the future though. maybe they are banking on taxes from more people moving here. no one wants to move over here though so that theory is shot. i curse the realtor that sold me on this house with, "your only 10 minutes from downtown and 30 from the beach".

Why? Is one ship really more important than hundreds(maybe even into the thousands when accounting for all directions) of cars?

It's happened four times this week that I know of. Three times were actually tankers going to the shipyard so MAYBE they are important enough, but Monday afternoon it was for a sailboat with a very tall mast. WTF?

I think it may have something to do with safety......I would think a fully loaded tanker would take a few miles to be able to come to a complete stop and by the time they saw the bridge it would be to late. Even if they knew there was a bridge coming up and were supposed to stop at certain times of day, there is too much room for human error and a disaster is sure to happen.

As far as the sailboat, kind of the same thing. I would think a big sailboat wouldn't be easy to stop either. Even if it wasn't who would say one ship is big enough to open for and another isn't and what if the boat captain thinks he is big enough but the bridge operator doesn't....disaster.

But I sit behind a desk all day so there is a good chance I am wrong. :D

Taking notes from this thread. Moving down there in August

east side of the river = higher taxes and property, but after ~4 yrs i've come to the conclusion that its worth it

i'd be fine with them making their money if they'd use some of it to improve the route. on that note. the memorial is currently being painted. thats done on 3rd shift hours though. probably with consideration to the boats though and not the commuters.
