Chargers Franchise Sproles. Bucs Franchise Bryant

I would imagine they are feeling out the LT situation. And by that I mean if he gets injured again this season they will cut him and they then can sign sproles to a new contract.

They are trying to make him take a pay cut by restructuring his contract over a few more seasons that he won't see. They still have the option of cutting him before the draft or trading him. However if they both play in SD next season the split will be 60-40.

Sproles was not going to hit FA, the Chargers knew that they couldn't keep up with the offers. However there are two things going their way.

1. Franchise Sproles, and then get him to sign a long term deal.

2. Franchise Sproles, then drop the tag later, if the draft/LT/FA works out to their advantage.

I would assume that the Bolts will not be paying Sproles the 6 plus million that the Tag would command.

LT will restructure, and if not will be cut or traded. Sproles will sign a long term deal, or be traded.

Smith still saying LT in plans

Tagging Sproles was something that maybe the team should have done with Brees/Turner (with the intention of dealing).

The Bolts can't win for losing....in this situation.

They tried to be nice to both Turner, and Brees, and let them walk into FA, and essentially pick their teams. Not many teams are willing to let players just walk like that, but AJ did....and he catches hell for not getting anything for them.

Now, they are having to play a little more hardball with LT, and Sproles, and the entire sports nation can't believe that they are not treating their players nicely.....they are in a tough spot.

If they had tagged Drew, and traded him to the Lions, and done the same with Turner to say.....Seattle the Bolts would be in a much better place. But nope, they let the players walk after they fulfilled their contracts....pretty nice way to do biz, if you ask me.

    • Agreed on the last part. They can’t afford to lose all these games with Martin and Perets.
    • Yes.  And this converts directly to confidence.  Does the coach have confidence to call a deep dig or seam route?  Does Bryce have confidence in his ability to be the Alpha?  Do his teammates have confidence.  About film--when I see Cam Newton's pre-snap confidence vs. Bryce's, it is night and day.   Film--tells you if the WRs are open (why l love watching the Replay telecasts from the end zone cameras--you can see it.  I have seen 2 WRs open and Bryce's eyes are on the outlet WR or the pass rush. )  You can see progressions, and he has improved a bit--but he is very quick to rush through 1 and 2 and checkdown--that is a lack of confidence in his ability to read the defense.  I had a former NFL TE (Deems Maye) who played QB in high school (not sure about college) tell me that the best QBs read the defense by knowing where everyone will be when the ball is to arrive--not where they are.  I think his QB at the time was Humphries.  He said that Humphries would throw the ball into coverage before the cuts etc.  because he understood DB momentum, zone areas, etc.  and he could just see it.  Said so when people say nobody was open, they are usually right because nobody should be "open" when the QB has the ball--when the ball arrives, everyone should be open.  He said Humphries was never "great" but his skills were limited--from a small school--but his ability to read a defense made him never give up on a route.
