Remind me why Marty Hurney should be fired.

Hurney hires the coaching staff. He also manages the salary cap. He runs the draft. He doesn't play, nor does he coach.

So if you love the current hires, and you're halfway impressed that we have so much homegrown talent, and you are smart enough to get past the emotion and look at how he manipulated the cap by making strange extensions, etc.... then you might realize that he doesn't exactly suck at his job.

Maybe so,even with a decent qb the talent he had around him to throw to wasn't much better than what he had in atl. I'm not sure vick would have lifted us out of the top ten.

That was the case with most of the talking heads. No, I couldnt promise he was going to go out and tear it up like he did,but For the price he was going to be asking you telling me he wasn't worth the risk? With a guy who was coming out as labeled as another player with unlimited potential, you have to take a shot. I could have told you he had a better shot at being good than matt moore or insert back-up quarterback here.

I very much understand you take the shot.. but what shot? the guy went to prison for 2 years for off the field issues, not the 1st but one of many issues. the guy never studied film. the guy was not a great passing QB. the guy was 2 year out of the league, very few rarely make it back. so all things considered, without riding the hype train that has always been VICK, only ONE team out of 31 (that I've seen reported) went for the guy.

And it took Andy Reid and one of the most talented offenses in the league to get him back on his feet, as we saw from his 1st year back to his 2nd.

I very much understand you take a shot. but with that said, everyone else must understand why you wouldn't. so what I'm saying is it's a 50/50 shot that he works out and only 1 team felt that 50% was worth acting on. We'll see if that was a 1 year wonder or if he has another 5 TD game next year.

lol at people defending Jake's extension with the :Hurrf Hurrf I told you sooo" rhetoric.

no clue what that means (at the end)

what I should have said all along...

cyber and bleys, I don't hate the Marty. I think he does a decent job. BUT, and this is a HUGE but......Armanti Edwards is our 33rd pick this year.

Right or wrong, that trade just sticks in my craw. We got duped into trading up for a 1-AA QB to WR convert. If we had the #1 overall and the #33 overall this year, we could really do some damage and shore up QB and DL.

Instead we have some skinny, undersized WR with stick legs and confidence issues.

I am right there with you. We could have had Mike Williams. don't ponder that too long, it still gives me violent fits.

I'll give Armanti some slack since we've drafted a ton of crap recievers in the 2nd and we all gave them years to "prove they had it"..We don't have Fox here anymore to bury our young guys on the depth chart so this time we will know a lot sooner if it's the worst pick ever.. We have failed so many times with our 2nd round picks though you would think everyone should just be numb to the thought..I'm sure we could/would have used it on a head scratcher this year too..

some reports have claimed that pick was JR's doing directly. He wanted Armanti.

Cyber, not sucking at my job is not how I want to be thought of around the office.

Hurney drove this franchise to the first pick in the draft. Like it or not, that is fact. I respect your opinions, but honestly, this guy does suck at his job.

Here are reasons why Hurney should be fired.

Trading a 1st round pick to move up 9spots in the 2nd round for Everette Brown, a guy who has never produced.

Using your 1st pick, that was in the 2nd round, on Jimmy Clausen, and then bailing on him 1 year later. He actually was thinking about trading our 1st round pick this year to get him, how scary/ignorant is that, seriously?????????

That same draft, trading a 2nd round pick to get Armanti Edwards who has contributed nothing, he was a hometown hero who played at a small college and the pro's are too much for him.

Let's not forget him being content with mediocre QB play for so long.

Did I mention we let Julius Peppers go, the best player in franchise history, for nothing?

We let Muhsin Muhammad go to the Bears, for nothing. That was after a year he led the NFL in TD's and Yds.

How many great FA's has he brought in? Devin Thomas last year, the stay at home dad to play QB, David Carr, Keyshawn Johnson, his lack of making moves is not showing a willingness to win.

Need I say more?

Also the one guy who took a shot at the Falcons, they drafted Jason Snelling in the 7th round, who is a helleva backup. They also have brought in good free agents such as Tony Gonzalez.

I'll give Hurney credit for nailing the best 1st round picks available (peppers, gross, gamble, davis, williams, beason, stewart & otah) & making the best steals (Connor, Munnerlyn, Kalil (pro bowler), Gettis), but 2nd round picks haven't been his best (jarrett, colbert, possibly brown & clausen but we'll see). Trades and/or FA hasn't been that great either in exception of Ken Lucas, Mike Wahle & James Anderson, so I'm still satisfied with him

So purging the veterans, and having to keep Fox for at least one year nger than he wanted were Hurney's calls alone?

These are the things that have hurt our franchise the most in recent years:

  • The Julius Peppers situation. Hurney offered to make him the highest paid player in the league, twice. And the way Peppers played it was exactly the way he had to in order to do the maximum damage to the Panthers. Do you really think Hurney should have just let him walk without trying?
  • The veteran purge. Not his decision.
  • Keeping Fox on too long. Not his decision.
  • No QB waiting in the wings when Jake folded. They tried with David Carr. They missed on Aaron Rodgers. They thought they had something in Moore. I will fault Hurney for letting Fox hire Scherer, but he has tried to get a QB in here. Too bad they don't grow on trees...
  • No depth behind Kemo. Yeah, that was bad. But he did a hell of a job getting people in here to stabilize things, particularly given how every other GM in the league knew we were desperate.

As far as the good, he has been great at cap management for ten years now. Fox was a successful hire. Rivera looks promising. He has yet to miss on a first round pick, and hits on a lot of others. Give him a star DE with a sense of loyalty or a legit franchise QB and he would probably get credit for being one of the league's best. As it is, he's pretty damn good, and we are lucky to have him.
