Remind me why Marty Hurney should be fired.

"you must spread rep before giving it to bleys again"

Why is this so hard for some people to get. Cut Jake that year, we might have reduced the cap hit a $mil or two. By extending him, we reduced the hit by about $12-3 mil

What we saved was nowhere near that high and when you find out the real number you're gonna be pissed

They genuinely thought he had 2-3 good years left in the tank and so did a lot of people on here. The savings in cap was complementary incentive to get an extension done.

I know exactly what purpose it served and still would have liked to cut him. Its not like he was good before that epic collapse, as I remember he was always less than average.

If you compare him to the rest of the QB's in the league, he was actually at or above average for his first 3-4 years. He started going downhill during the 05 NFC championship, and got progressively worse as time went along. The injury didn't help matters either.

You are right, from what I could find, it was in the $3-5 million range. (I was under the impression that the majority of the deal was in bonuses.) I'm still not as pissed about it as I am the move that predicated it. Keeping Pep @ $17 mil forced us to restructure Jake so that we would be able to sign our draft picks.

I'm sure that they were hopeful that he had some left in the tank, but it was a cap move more than anything

No, we are not.

Why was Delhomme extended? Cap relief.

Who is in charge of managing the Cap? Marty Hurney.

It was his screw ups that put us in cap hell in the first place.

Personally I don't care about what he did 5, 6, or even 7 years ago. I only care about the last 3 or 4, and because he has made bad choices time and time again in that timeframe, we are the worst team in the league.

I can't disagree with you because I hate how they handled Pep.. Pep took up 20mil in cap room and forced the Jake resigning to clear some cap space.

however, if you've met the average ignorant fan, you know Jake Delhomme getting resigned is all they are focused on and apparently the Panthers were thrown a curve ball when they found out Peyton Manning wasn't available..

wait, didnt someone start a thread a long time ago about how we could trade for Rivers?

now, Raging Bull might throw his own curve ball here, but I assumed it was around 3 or 5 mil that we saved to help sign some rookies. I'd be interested to know what that number is, then again, maybe I don't..

but the Jake Delhomme resigning wasn't to keep our own version of Manning on board, as some people like to make it sound. this cleared cap space.

what does ignorance have to do with it? I didnt want him on the roster period. It was time to rebuild, and resigning a BAD qb is the worst thing you can do for the locker room and for the fans. Just stupid

QBs don't grow on trees and you are about to witness the exact opposite philosophy that you're pointing out.

if we grab Newton/Gabbert, it will be in our best interest to get a vet QB (the likes of Volek, Palmer, Bulger, and McNabb have been mentioned. Real prize winners, I might add.)

it's one thing to have a Derrek Anderson and be concerned with your locker room.. Delhomme, by all reports, never lost the locker room.

is it to late to add in the dismissal of micheal vick begging to come to carolina? I know alot of this comes down to the big cat,but from whats going on in the draft process he said he would defer to his gm and head coach on personal. Reguardless if you hate vick or not, he would have saved most the frachise from having to debate about cam newton and free'd us to take an a.j green or jones or maybe peterson.

people can claim Vick was going to be a pro bowler, but very few actually believed it. There were a lot of football related reasons to deny Vick. Throw on top of that one of the biggest character concerns other than Pacman Jones and I can't see why many would think Vick was a great choice.

he didn't do poo last year (understandable) and trailed off this year. I'll be interested to see what teams do with more film and how he handles getting hit like he saw towards the end of the year.

So your saying if we had signed Vick, we would still be picking top 10? :biggrinjester:

Maybe so,even with a decent qb the talent he had around him to throw to wasn't much better than what he had in atl. I'm not sure vick would have lifted us out of the top ten.

That was the case with most of the talking heads. No, I couldnt promise he was going to go out and tear it up like he did,but For the price he was going to be asking you telling me he wasn't worth the risk? With a guy who was coming out as labeled as another player with unlimited potential, you have to take a shot. I could have told you he had a better shot at being good than matt moore or insert back-up quarterback here.
