On the teams don't care about experts - I remember when Brandon Siler came out, everyone and their mom had him as a 2nd rounder and he fell all the way to the 7th. I also remember a lot of the sites liking Cadogan around late 2 early 3 and he ended up UDFA.

Anytime the Panthers go after a player that's falling in the draft, I cringe a little.

And honestly, as advice given to the average poker player, it's not that shocking.

If he said it he said it to a newbie. Because you can't play the style he really would tell you to play unless you have some experience in the game.

If you go out and read Super System and then hit the tables or the internet without ever having played before you will be broke by the end of the day.

But what he says is:

Like me, all top players know you have to be extremely aggressive

If I find somebody I can keep betting at and he keeps saying "take it Doyle", "take it Doyle".. well I'm going to keep pounding him. I'm not going to let up. That's what most players do... they keep throwing their hands away. They're weak. They sit down and try to make the nuts on you. That's hard to do. So you keep whamming on 'em and whamming in 'em and you just wear them down. And sooner or later, you'll win all their money

Ironic as all get out that I'm writing about watching the draft, honestly.

Twenty-some years ago a friend of mine asked me if I wanted to watch the NFL Draft with him (he had ESPN, I didn't). I told him that as much as I loved football, if I went so far as to actually watch the draft, I'd need to have myself treated for addiction.

Now I'm watching the coverage, reading all the previews, checking out the online info and writing articles about it.

The addiction part might actually be valid, but I'm not taking any steps to end it :sosp:

Williams was actually picked about where people expected him to be. The big dropper that year was LenDale White, a guy a lot of mocks had us picking.

Yeah I remember that year I wanted Laurence Maroney SO bad pre-draft. Ashamed to say I was a little upset when we drafted DeAngelo. But I try to never get too crazy after a pick, because obviously the scouts know more than me, even if I can yell really loud at the TV.

Word was that the Panthers did too, but the Patriots actually saved them from themselves by trading up for Mauroney.

I always chuckle about that particular story whenever someone cites the Patriots as one of the better drafting teams in the league :lol:

I want to especially stress the "Draft Boards Vary (wildly)" section:

This could not be more true. If a team likes a guy enough and honestly thinks he's a strong fit for their system, they are going to do what they need to to reach and grab the guy. Great example with Nelson and we all have Armanti fresh in our memories

Also pointing to this, please don't be surprised if we take Mallett number 1 overall, he is pretty damned high on our board.

he was expected to go like top ten that's why we wanted to get LenWhale cuz no one thought he would be there

I agree but we did get Greg Hardy....not saying he wasn't well worth the risk at the time we drafted him
