Godfrey/Martin

I like the combo of Martin,Godfrey and Pugh.

Pugh is a guy I'm actually behind. Not just because Godfrey is an easy scapegoat but he showed some flashes on special teams and on his limited play. With our new staff I'm pumped that both Jordan and Charles will be coached up really well in our new defense

Why do people hate on Godfrey instead of the true poo sandwich in the secondary last year, marshall?

There were more than a few times Godfrey looked beat because he had to cover the hole in covered left by Richard.

Because honestly they both aren't anything special & Marshall looks worse because imo he has a piss poor attitude on the field.

I'm just gonna go ahead and say it: We have wayy many more holes than people think. Just because we're content with the talent level at a position doesn't mean its going to actually come to fruition. See: Jarrett, Colbert, Nelson, Ellison, on and on and on

First minicamp I ever attended, I remember when the units were splitting up, Ron Meeks voice boomed out yelling "Where's Richard Marshall? Where's Richard Marshall? Is he running?"

Got the immediate impression that Meeks wasn't too high on him. Of course, the feeling could very well be mutual.

Uh after rewatching last year and being one of godfrey's biggest critics he's not that bad.

From reactions it looked like most of his blown coverages were actually him covering someone else's ass, and the replays generally backed this up.

I haven't figured this out either. Godfrey has steadily improved since injury and martin coming in playing well for him. It's like they put Godfrey in the "he sucks" zone and refuse to see the good things he does or how much better he is. However when he makes a bad play it gets treated like he is the worse player in league. Hell there was a stretch when he was actually playing the best out of all our secondary players.

As usual it will take a columnist or someone to make a play for him for people to realize that he isn't as bad as a lot of people here make out. I'm actually excited to see how much better Godfrey and Martin play this year.

I wouldn't say I've given up on Godfrey, but I'm definitely not sold on him either.

He's had a couple of "big hit" highlights that got some attention from analysts, and I think some overrated him a little based on those highlights.

That said, pretty much everyone deserves at least something of a pass from the disaster that was last year's general situation. For that alone, i'll happily give him a year under the eye of the new staff to see what he's really worth.

It's on him to prove it.

Wasn't Martin a 3rd rounder?

I thought he was better his rookie year and had a bit of a sophomore slump. Everything I've seen from him tells me he's a player and if he doesn't get hurt he'll be a panther for awhile. I've heard great things about his character as well so A+.

As for Godfrey, I wish he was our 3rd best safety and his game doesn't really mesh well with Martin. They're both naturally free safeties; where they play the best and since I love Martin, I'd like to have him as Martin's backup. Man, if we could get fuging Chris Harris back we'd be straight. Anyways, Godfrey gets burned a lot so I'll give him a B for Burn and minus for not being a SS. So B-.

Taken together, I'll give them a B+. Godfrey's going to be tested a lot this year... and I think Martin was less effective because he tried to play outside himself to cover for Godfrey's sucky ass this last season.

i'm really interested in seeing how godfrey and martin shape up in the new aggressive zone/blitzish defense rivera and mcdermott install. both of them have the high-end speed to really be solid in zone coverage. i'm kind of in love with pugh as well and think he will be a very important part of the secondary.

i agree that godfrey got kind of a bad rap on this board during the season. something about fox/meeks defense led to constant miscommunication between CB's and the safeties. not sure who the idiot is in those scenarios. some in this thread suspect marshall and/or godfrey. this is where having 3 former very successful DC's on the staff could come in very handy. allowing players to feel comfortable in knowing their roles and being able to play without overthinking situations.

i think given the opportunity to sit in deep zone on passing downs and read the QB, intense pressure up front could lead to lots of aggressive play by the safeties on the roster. one of the stronger positions on the team, IMO. as for how they measure up to the rest of the league, i'd like to see how they adjust to a new scheme before i venture into that.

edit: one of both godfrey and martin's biggest strengths aside from above average speed is that the fox mentality has gotten them both to be unafraid of getting in there and making the tough hits on runners. hopefully they can keep that up while avoiding serious injury.

    • Serious question:  Why LG and not RG?  There may be something I do not know, but Hunt's contract is huge and he could be let go after this season (post june 1 cut) and it would save the Panthers a ton of money.  Extending him would be paying a G who is in his mid 30s guaranteed money (and I do not see that as a terrible thing).  So if we release him at age 31, we save $19m.  I like him, but at 31, will he be worth the mega contract?   LG Damien Lewis has actually outperformed Hunt and he is a year younger.  He would also save less vs. the cap and leave less in the dead cap pool.  While his current contract expires after the 2027 season, he is a better prospect (IMO) to extend because only 50% of his current contract was guaranteed.  Here are his contract numbers.   Now, getting to Ickey--he could want LT money if he is offered a second contract.  If we pay him LT money to play either G positions, we are likely overpaying.  Secondly, the injury he suffered could be one that limits his productivity.  Ickey was improving, but he was an average LT.  The only way I re-sign Ickey is to have him accept a G contract and make a lot of it incentive based.     I feel like I am missing something, but in my mind, Ickey was always a guard if you consider the fact that he is an average OT and would be a great G.  Is that still the case (injury)?
    • Supplemental draft uses picks from next year. So a team were to draft him in the 1st, their upcoming 1st next draft would no longer be available. There have been some notable players that were obtained in the supplemental draft, such as Kosar. It doesn't necessarily happen every year either, and is more on a as needed basis. The gambling trouble is a big red flag for teams, and maybe pushes him down to a 4th? Not sure a team would use a 1st on him.
    • If hypothetically, Ickey comes fully healthy, would he be willing to give up left tackle money for left guard money? In the Panthers case, moving Ickey LG or RT would be in our best interest and as it gives us our best starting offensive lineman combination. However, Im sure there's another team that would be desperate and willing to dish out top dollars for Ickey to have him come play left tackle for them. In that case, Ickey would just leave for that team instead.
