Peter King: Panthers doing homework on Newton

"'A few times,'' he said, "I'd be sitting in my office late, watching tape, trying to figure out what we'd do in the game that week. He'd call and say, 'What are you doing? Can I come up and watch with you?' And he'd come up and we'd go over things. He just loved it. The best way I can say it with Cam about football is, he's just ate up with it.''"

And there are people who still question his work ethic. If a guy has this kind of work ethic and his obvious physical gifts you can overcome and fix a lot of his short comings. If he stays clean off the field we may have found our franchise QB (assuming all the signs are true).

What more do you want from a kid. His coach in Blinn raved about him, his work ethic, his leadership and what kind of person he is. His story of the championship game in 2009 is what makes legends in the NFL. Unlike a RT that I know of that if he strains his middle finger he goes to the IR list, at least he plays with pain and the desire to win is #1.

What kills me is the HATERS want to convince themselves that the information requested just happens to be a formality in the process of selecting anyone but Newton. I can't wait until the 28th so this drama can be over with.

In the beginning I was against Newton, but over the past 3 months I have been convinced that if we pass on Newton it will become a mistake we will regret. Hopefully not like Red Sox Letting Babe Ruth go and the curse they live with for almost 100 yrs.

Pull the trigger, Draft Newton

Don't take "their coaches raving about them" as anything monumental. All coaches rave about their players.

I seem to recall that the LSU coach "raved" about JaMarcus Russell before he was drafted.

Again, I am not "speculating" whether we take Cam or not. I think there is a very good chance that we do....but also a very good chance that we don't.

Just pointing out that all of the speculation by the "experts" is nothing but that.....speculation and conjecture. It is based on NOTHING but their opinion and gut feelings.

If one could come out and say that JR or Hurney said he was our likely choice, I would give credibility to it. Until then, these articles and blogs are worthless.....no matter how much the Cam Believers (switched my name for them to be more PC) want to believe they mean more.

And the same old threads keep being made.

Anyone speculates that the Panthers are taking Newton......a dozen Cam Nut Huggers piss themselves trying to make a new thread.

You need to get over your problem, whatever it is.

One of the best known sports columnists in the country writes about what the Panthers are doing leading up to their number 1 pick, and you don't think it is grounds for discussion in a Panthers forum?

I have now seen it all!

While any coach wants to see his "Boys" in the NFL. This doesn't sound like your snowball answer to an interview. He called the folks that said he was fake "Full of poo with a capital S.

While you are correct that it is an assumption or speculation you cannot pass on the indicators that they asked for Tape. Clearly that has to be some sort of indicator that the meeting went somewhat well last week and they want additional information.

Even as a supporter I cannot say for certain that we are taking King... But I can hope.

So if coaches just talk up their guy and are their comments are to be ignored, then how does anybody find out any information on his work ethic? Honestly, I would trust what his former coaches say more than what scouts are saying during draft time.

I fully believe the meeting went well with Cam....because the staff and ownership group came out and said it did.

Just like I fully believe that he is definitely in the mix for the #1 overall pick.

Like any non-emotional and rational person out there, I am not jumping at every "speculation" by the talking heads as "evidence" of anything. I take it for what it is...speculation.

Now on a serious note: If you have to go all the way back to Blinn Juco to further review the guy, he shouldn't be your pick. You remember all those kids on high school teams that have no business at all ever stepping on a D1, D2 or D3 field? Guess where they go to School and still play some ball? Nuff said

WOW!! You mean last year he dominated the SEC as essentially a true freshman who hadn't had meaningful time against true competition!!! Makes me want him more. ;)
