Vernon Gholston Anyone?????

Hayden is playing in a system that fits him, he has no talent, Gholston does, try fitting a square beg in a round hole and see what happens.

Haha ok. I have no talent, so I can go suit up for Foxy in Denver in and drop 30 tackles in a given year? Hayden is a fine rotational player, he's proven that. Gholston was a healthy scratch on a defense that needed healthy bodies all over the front seven over the past three years. He can't play in space, and he definitely can't be a five technique, but good football players should be able to give you something. He couldn't give them anything, anywhere.

And why even talk about Hayden? It's not like they play the same position or anything.

If we bring him in to play his college position, super but he is a non-entity. 14 tackles a year isn't anything. I will be more excited about undrafted free agents than a pickup like that.

it isn't that different.

a 3-4 DE (5 technique) is more comparable to a 4-3 DT (3-technique) than a DE. That is a pretty big difference.

However, it does bother me that he never got a sack and that he was a "workout warrior." People aren't saying sign a 5-year lease; they are saying that we should give him a test drive as the #4 DE.

I know football techniques are different depending on who you talk to, but you're wrong, he is a 5 technique, which is what he did best at. Line him up on the outside shoulder of the offensive tackle, not head up where he has to bull rush a guy whose a lot bigger then he is, which is what NY told him to do. Let him have the freedom to use his speed and athleticism.

4 Technique is head up on the Tackle

5 Technique is outside shoulder of the Tackle.

Huge difference.

5 technique end in a 3-4 is what they had him doing last season, where he was supposed to eat up blocks. They had him at OLB before that, in space. Like I said they lined him up in a number of positions that didn't fit him perfectly, but he still never gave them anything. He's probably just not a very good football player.

I'm just saying from a Jet's fan point of view this thread probably looks like "Dwayne Jarrett cut by Panthers!!!". Of course he was drafted high and considered a great college player, but his NFL production has been terrible to the point that he was a consistent healthy scratch.

2010-2011 Season Tackles

Charles Johnson- 62

Greg Hardy- 30

Everette Brown- 25

Tyler Brayton- 22

Vernon Gholston- 12

2010-2011 Sacks

Charles Johnson- 11.5

Everette Brown- 3.5

Greg Hardy- 3.0

Tyler Brayton- 0.0

Vernon Gholston- 0.0

I would list more stats but I don't have the time. The point is in ever single 2010-2011 defensive stat Johnson, Brown, Hardy, and Brayton all recorded better numbers than Gholston. No way in hell would I want to waste a roster spot on this underachiever.

He is one of the biggest (defensive player's) busts ever, I compare him to Jason Peter as far as production (not position) but worse because Justin Peter wasn't drafted 6th overall; he was drafted 14th overall and because Justin Peter actually tried to play, he just happened to suck (I place more of the blame on the scouting staff). Gholston looks like he may have it in him but I don't want to take the time to find out if he does or not because it would probably take three more years. Instead lets just draft a decent defensive end in the 6th round like we did last year with Greg Hardy. How about Markus White out of Florida State? His 58 tackles and 8 sacks look pretty good to me in the 6th round.

You are probably too young to remember Brian Bosworth, but he is the benchmark for defensive busts. I am not saying give him a roster spot--just a chance to make the team--he could turn heads, or not. I would not offer him a contract above league min with a very minimal -if any-signing bonus. Like buying a lottery ticket.

Yeah, I didn't start watching football til I was 7 and considering I am only 19 now; I would have to say I have never heard of him. But I guess thats what the internet is for.

To be fair, I think Bozzy went 22nd in the draft and Gholston went 6th, but he does get extra credit for being an "icon" and the terrible hair.
