Not a reach, and not gonna set us back.

I was having a discussion in the other thread and Highlandfire brought this up:

Jesus folks...with better coaching our QB's will improve somewhat right? the system its self will improve = better offensive play.

Look trade down, gather up a ton of picks and stock this team with talent overall. Take a QB to develop next year or the year after.

the only thing that can set this franchise back is reaching for a position esp QB.

I responded:

HF, I don't understand why people would say this about this year's draft. Everyone knows that there is not a consensus #1 pick that stands out and will save franchises (much like what Luck was purported to be). Moreover, the positions where we truly have need can be satisfactorily filled with a lower round (<1), or a vet, which may turn out to be at least equal to round 1 options. A pick like Green or PP would be great, but it's not something that we just have to have in light of what we already have, so I just don't see that setting us back. Stockpiling picks? With this draft? How in the hell are we going to get enough value to stockpile anything? Really? All this being said, I don't see how our #1 draft pick will be a reach. It will be more like a luxury pick because, as luck would have it (pun not intended), our specific situation and this specific draft class (as well as free agents who will become available) doesn't lend itself to a profound loss. In other words, we have little to lose, and much more to gain, so it just may be time to roll the dice on a high profile player, esp. at QB.

Like it or not, that may mean Newton. Worse come to worse, we suck. Then we go get Luck in 2012.

Now, if you don't agree, realistically explain to me how we are going to stockpile picks (and for who, or what), how picking at number 1 will be a "reach", and, most importantly, how making a pick for like Green or PP or Newton is going to really "set this franchise back"

With things as they are---the reality of the situation---the only reach I see is reaching for the stars. The real reach was last year when we traded up for AE (who I am still hoping will be worth it). If there is a setting back of the franchise, the set back took place in last year's draft. To me the whole idea of "setting us back" and "reaching for a QB" is just lip service. This draft ain't gonna kill us either way. In fact, we are in a position to do more good than harm. It's a roll of the dice, but we aren't betting the farm either way.

I dont believe our pick is that valuable unfortunately, so at best, if we are lucky another top 10 draft team and scoop up their 2nd, again, if we are lucky and someone makes that call... which I doubt.

If we draft a QB this year, then under no circumstance, will we draft one next year in the first round... you can't tie that much money up at one position. That mindset is worse than the thought that we can trade down and get great value. The only way this does not set us back, is if Cam is dat deal.

Too long for me to read. I demand cliff notes.

HF: We should trade down and stockpile picks. Making a pick, esp. at QB will set franchise back.

TD: We should exploit pick, esp. at QB. Won't kill us either way. If a set back to the franchise happened, it was last draft. This draft more akin to luxury pick because no one is going to give us anything of value. Other pressing needs can be filled in lower rounds or FA.

There you go, SFGF.

if they can get a top 12 pick plus a top 12 2nd round pick for #1 I don't see how they don't do it.

Cam huggers can blame Armanti Edwards if this happens also

BC that would be one of the worst trades in Panthers history. Maybe worse than the Brown or Edwards trade.

We may move down 3-4 spots. But I don't see us moving too far down. We still want the biggest impact player at their position. You begin to lose that ability the farther down you go.

IF we do go lower than there will be next year's 1st round from the other team involved or it will be a no go.

some Mocks are projecting Fairly to the Titants at their pick(#8?), so we could get our guy plus 2nd rounder.

at 12 we could probably get Julio Jones plus the 2nd which we could get a solid DT with.

So, Jones and say Marvin Austin? or keep #1 and draft just one player, Dareus, Newton or Green probably.?

What will set this franchise back more than drafting Cam this year, should he become a bust WILL BE passing on Cam then having to trade a bunch of future high picks to move up next year to get the QB the Panthers want and that guy becomes a bust.

Bottom line....... drafting a bunch of picks to move up next year IS a much bigger risk to set this franchise back vs picking Newton this year.

Are you saying that every player drafted outside the top four is trash? What is this the NBA?

If there is a guy in the draft who we feel can be a franchise QB for us in the future, whether he be like peyton manning, or tom brady, you have to take him. Doesn't matter if it's cam newton, Blaine Gabbert, or even Tyrod freaking Taylor. It's not a reach if you think he will be worth it.

there are no reaches for draft picks at #1 overall, because you have your pick of everyone. the pick won't be considered a reach until 3 or 4 years from now. it will however, have BEEN a reach if he doesn't pan out.

That is why I am on the franchise QB bandwagon.

No. But when you here a GM saying that he wants a guy that will be the biggest impact on a team you probably don't want to take the #2 CB, or the #2 DT, or the #2 QB, etc. the further down you go the less ability you have to pick the guy you think will have the biggest impact. You have to take the guy that the other teams feel were the #2/#3 guy at that position.

So if you have the number one pick you don't really want to trade out unless you are stockpiling picks. Either for this draft or the next. And you almost certainly want two first round picks for it.

And you sure as hell don't do it with someone picking #10 and just swap and pick up a second.

We have two 3rd round picks. We can always trade back into the 2nd if we really want to do that.

Trading back isn't the only way to get back into the second round if Hurney feels it is necessary.
