It's not about whether it was fair or not to them, it's what they could do in our new system.

At this point, Newton isn't even the consensus #1 QB, let alone the consensus #1 player. Yet Luck was largely the consensus #1 player in addition to the #1 QB. That should tell you something about perception of the gap. Still, better to look past what others are saying.

Now, we're free to disagree with each other there, but from what I saw between the two, Luck was miles more advanced when it came to an NFL skill set than Newton.

Yeah but if you are in most people's top 20 you are thought of as being a big time impact player. If not you should be much lower. Agree??

and Jimmy Clausen was miles ahead of The Golden Calf of Bristol......

yet the complete opposite occured in terms of production and ability to play the position when they took the field.

Newton doesn't need to be a consensus #1 to take him. Like Tampa Bay said when they took Freeman at 17....they would have taken him #1 if that was there spot.

If Andrew Luck and Cam Newton were recreational basketball leagues at the local Y with increasing skill levels and competition levels as the week progressed (Tuesday = Recreational, Wednesday = Competitive but fun, Thursday = Those guys are ballin), Andrew Luck would be the Thursday league and Cam Newton would be the 8 year old kid shooting hoops outside the gym with his dad.

That's how large the gap is
