Gabbert compared to 1st round QB's

Recommended Posts

"anyone"? You mean "anyone P55 cares about", right? Because this thread was actually started because Path to the Draft had people saying we SHOULD take him #1 overall and used the argument earlier in the thread as a reason to do so...

Gabbert just doesn't have nearly the hype Newton does, because he's not nearly as exciting or sexy a pick. I don't expect him to be picked by us, but I also don't expect us to pick up Newton.

Still, what we've heard suggests he's coming back. The difference is that his group is keeping things extremely hush hush for some reason.

Then if you don't think we are going to pick him then why keep arguing?? Like I said, I am surprised we aren't talking him up that much. Particularly with some talking heads saying he is the best in the draft. But almost every mock out there doesn't have us taking him. I can only figure that people are not that excited about his upside mostly because he was average in college with a strength of schedule in the 20s.

when the hell did strength of schedule factor in to where you take a quarterback?? lol

Most scouts, draftniks, talent evaluators, look at skillset. Gabbert's got questions about how he'll transition and how he handles blitzes and being flushed from the pocket, how he'll handle a deep ball (NOT A vertical passing offense - his accuracy is superior to Ryan Mallett in throws between 11 and 30 yards against the best competition they each faced)... but this is NOT unusual for a college prospect, and was actually the case with some of the past guys who have gone high up, too. And just like Cam Newton, he needs to learn when to step up in the pocket and complete tough throws.

Average quarterbacks in college can turn into amazing pro quarterbacks, because the pro skillset does not always translate into huge success in college and because sometimes skill sets are still being refined and developed and not all college coaches or offenses are built to utilize what an NFL quarterback uses. Obviously, there are those who simply blow away the competition and still show a great NFL skill set.

The reason I "keep posting" is because some people on this board are insistent that we're not even bothering to look at him. That, and I like him a lot. He's my favorite QB in the draft and has the chance to be the best QB out of this class if he lands in the right spot. But I don't want a QB, so. :)

They look at strength of schedule to determine how tough his competition was. If he looks good against lower competition it impacts how effective he actually was. Sure he can be a good player on a bad team but if he is only average against poorer competition then it allows you to rate him against his peers.

Will he be a good quarterback in the NFL? I expect he might be in the right system. I just wonder why we aren't more excited about him. I would that thought we would have talked him up more. I wouldn't be unhappy if we picked him. But then I am one of the guys who want an upgrade over Clausen and Moore and want as many chances to make it happen as possible.

One thing that really scares me with Gabbert. Look at how low the ball is when he starts his throwing motion. That means he has a bit of a wind up, which means even though he may have good RPMs it is likely slow coming out of his hand and coverage will get a jump on his passes. It may be why he had trouble completing his deeper passes and third down passes.

I he were shorter than 6'5 he would have little chance completing a pass across the middle starting the ball that low and will have a hard time completing passes in 10-20 yard range in the NFL no matter how tall he is.

meh... didn't notice it as an issue in games and I haven't seen it pointed out. Sometimes he drops low but that also seems to depend on where he is throwing the ball.

keep in mind this guy is 2-3 inches shorter:

Both those guys have the ball at their shoulders. Gabberts is down near his damn hip.

that last peyton picture he isn't even throwing the ball!! The only Gabbert pic that I see that is comparable to those other two pics is the one from the combine IMO and maybe the second one.

But really you don't want the ball dipping that far below your shoulder. 2 & 3 are still not great even if it is better than the other 3

You are right about the Manning one. I thought I was linking a different one... It's hard to find good images of the start of his throwing motion.

The final picture is really low, but 1 and 4 are lower than they appear due to perspective of the camera angle and are NOWHERE near his hip. 4 is still the second worst of the bunch tho.

3 in shoulder pads would have the ball at half way up his shoulder pads. 2 has the tip of the ball at the top of his shoulder pad. I don't think either of those are unusually low at all, but tbh, I am not super familiar with the best ball handling during a throwing motion.

I have not seen it as a consistent problem.
