Gabbert compared to 1st round QB's

Recommended Posts

We all know Newton wasn't the sole reason for Auburn going to (especially winning) the championship game. It was the defense. This is a team sport, of course any QB's going to need help. Even Peyton Manning and Tom Brady would struggle without a good supporting cast.

Oh, by the way, there's no need to make excuses for a QB rated higher than Newton, and has similar comparisons to current franchise QB's. (Still don't like ether of them).

they both have actually carried offenses on their shoulders. they have won a lot of football games without a good supporting cast.

That's why they are Manning and Brady. Everyone will accept an above average QB. Everyone desires a Manning and Brady. There are no others. only a tier system is the most efficient way to label everyone else.

He has more experience as a starter than Newton. He does have the intangibles of 1st round QB's that have come out in the past few years. This is coming from people who actually GET PAID to make these judgements. But of course you are a better draft analyzer right? Did he win more than Newton? No. Did he carry his team? Yes, he was made the leader of the team his Junior year (that's very rare in Missouri). It was an honor for him. He's a leader, he can win a locker room. He will be much better in a Pro offense than in a spread. If he has a mix of all the QB's listed in the OP then he can be successful.

So shut up and stop drinking the kool aid.

He has more experience losing as well. Again what intangibles? Why are we not considering him with the first pick? A guy like Rivera who played the game appears totally unimpressed?? Why? If Gabbert is so great then why are we not even talking about him? Our guys whose jobs depend on making the right choice don't think he is worth the top pick.

I am not saying I am betterdraft expert than anyone, I am just saying that his 16 TDs were very pedestrian. And with a big lead in a bowl game, he throws a boneheaded pick 6 and they lose. That shows poor decision making and poor intangibles not great ones.

Acting juvenile and telling people to shut up doesn't change the reality. Gabbert is great against McNeese State and poor competition. He can even play well for stretches like he did against Iowa. But he isn't great when it counts or he is pressured. If he can't stand up to a college blitz, he will wilt faster than butter in the hot sun against a team like Pittsburgh or Balitmore who know how to bring the house.

And that is why we isn't on our list.

Waiting for the Gabbert fans to combat this with, "But we do not know if he is on the panthers list or not"

I dunno, you're actually posting in a thread about him, so I think you're talking about him. Rivera has commented on him, quite glowingly. Gantt has to say daily he isn't gonna get picked. The team is bringing him back in for another interview, workout, and whiteboard session. I'd say he's in consideration, but no, he isn't going to go #1.

most experts don't concern themselves with *number* of TDs. They are more concerned with operating an offense.

Gabbert is great against McNeese State and poor competition.

Oklahoma, #1 team in the nation: Poor competition.

And that is why we isn't on our list.

I'll let Hurney know they should cancel his pre-draft workouts.

The reality is Gabbert is inconsistent, has things he's good at and things he's not. He's by no means a sure fire prospect, but he's got potential.

we actually know he *is* on the Panthers list... at least as far as we know anyone is who hasn't been leaked by their agent (coughnewtoncough)

All anyone seems to say is that if we go QB it will be Newton. Honestly it surprised me as well. I figured when Gabbert had a 42 wonderlic and was athletic, I thought we would give him a serious look. I can only figure that our scouts and coaches put more into game results than they do playing pitch and catch in shorts.

But how seriously. Is anyone saying we are going to take him at this point. If it isn't Newton it is Dareus or a trade down.

"anyone"? You mean "anyone P55 cares about", right? Because this thread was actually started because Path to the Draft had people saying we SHOULD take him #1 overall and used the argument earlier in the thread as a reason to do so...

Gabbert just doesn't have nearly the hype Newton does, because he's not nearly as exciting or sexy a pick. I don't expect him to be picked by us, but I also don't expect us to pick up Newton.

Still, what we've heard suggests he's coming back. The difference is that his group is keeping things extremely hush hush for some reason.

Why are you guys so sure we aren't going to give him a look?

I think they are looking at him but I wonder if they are as high on him from the reports it seems like they are most high on Cam, Green, Dareus and Peterson to go #1...

 at Gabbert not having nearly as much hype as Newton that's a joke right? dude has become overhyped at this point as far as the media goes. It's just started to cool down with people talking up Newton this past week.

other reports say JR doesn't want Cam and some even say we don't want him and are looking at just Green, Dareus, Peterson.

I do not think we're going to take a QB. I do think we're going to give Gabbert a hard look, because they want to be *sure* they are not passing on the Next Big Thing.

Yeah and they don't worry about facts like he was terrible against the blitz, less than 50% on third down, had a TD to INT ratio of below 2, had the 6th rated passing efficiency in the Big 12 (yeah not the nation but his own conference), had the lowest passing rating of any of the top 5 quarterbacks in the draft, and only threw 23 passes of 25 + yards all year.

I guess that doesn't matter since they only happened in games against generally average competition.

Oklahoma was number 6th this year after beating Connecticut in a bowl game. Connecticut???? Oklahoma has the 11th ranked most difficult schedule in 2010. Missouri was ranked 25th. But lets talk about how tough their schedule was. Even with that they only went 8-3.

I figure they will still look at him in the event they trade down and pick him at 4 or 5.
