Report: Richardson “not sold” on Cam Newton, but will likely defer decision

One day its, JR would never bring in a character concern like Newton. Implying this is his team and the buck stops with him.

The next its, JR will "defer" and wont be a part of this decision. So if it fails, JR was "tricked" into it.

LMAO. Which one is it?

First, I dont think any of this is true. Who did he tell this to? Secondly, if it is true, it implies that CN isn't his first choice, but doesnt want to interfere with personnel decisions. Again, I dont think JR would have leaked this, this early.

If we just go by what most perceive as a "can't miss prospect", I think only Peterson is worthy of a #1 pick.

Dareus seems like a huge reach for a DT that may just be average, that's if he doesn't turn out like most DTs that are taken in the top 5.

Green seems like it would be a wasted pick. How pissed would people be if Green couldn't beat out LaFell and Gettis? Both young WRs showed a lot of potential last season. Potential is huge when you think about the lack of, that Clausen and Moore showed last year.

I don't JR's hesitation, if any, comes from character concerns but rather the risk involved in drafting a QB in the first round.

JR seems like the type of guy that takes the advice of learning form your mistakes to heart. When the Panthers draft Collin back in 1995 I think they drafted him becasue they needed a QB for a new team. I think JR just wants them to draft a player based on talent and not need. That is where the hesitation is probably coming from, I know it's where a lot of my hesitation concerning Newton is coming from.

speculation

or

smokescreen

or

racism

or

racial bias

take your pick, one of the three!

edit: there we are, all set

Believe it or not, it could be a bit of gamesmanship.

Follow me on this...

Suppose you're GM for a team maybe in the lower half of the top ten (could also be top five but lower makes more sense) and you'd like to trade up for Newton but you're convinced that the Panthers are dead set on taking him so you think "what's the point of making an offer?"

Ah, but then you hear this little tidbit, and suddenly you're Lloyd Christmas going "so you're saying there's a chance".

Maybe then you get on the phone and make a trade up offer that you didn't think was worth making before.

All part of the poker game.

Peter King has previously speculated on this, so the idea's not really knew. For all we know, King's speculation could be the source of the story.

About the only real hard news I take from this is that now I know for sure what the "Newton is God" crowd will be screaming about if we don't take him.

Anyone else remember JR saying we weren't trading down even before we knew who was at #1?

I remember (if I do so correctly) him saying in that interview/pie chart press conference that we'd stay in that spot, but when Marty responded he didn't look too happy that JR had said something to that effect...

I think JR was trying to wow Luck and was salivating at getting him, but I don't think Marty or JR have ever been totally sold on absolutely staying at #1

I still don't think we know who is at #1...
