Report: Richardson “not sold” on Cam Newton, but will likely defer decision

Options Richardson likes:

1) draft AJ Green for future, get QB next year(luck, Barkley or Jones) or find a free agent...and plan to be good few yrs down road.

2) draft Defense(PP or Dareus) and plan to get really good at defense while sucking at offense and get whatever free agent help on offense can find.

Drafting Cam Newton instead of options 1 or 2, is a huge gamble. Either we hit a home run and have our Franchise QB or we strike out and set back the franchise 5 yrs

1- only problem is in today's NFL it doesn't take 5 yrs to build a team. Jerry already started the process last year. Sitting on your hands for another season doesn't make much sense......no guarantee Carolina could get a QB they even wanted next year.

2- don't love it but could handle it. A Palmer would be a night and day difference to a sucky suckbag like Clausen.

I think, especially in NFC South, we will find ourselves picking top 12 and have a chance at one of the 3 franchise QB's coming out, probably Jones, maybe Barkley.

all 3 are more a prototype QB than Newton is.

if we draft Green, we might could trade Smith for a solid Defensive Tackle

The other thing, if we strike out on this pick, the last 2yrs 1st and 2nd round draft picks will be:

Jimmy Claussen, Armanti Edwards, and Cam Newton(or whoever strike out on).

I guess you could throw in Everette Brown and Goodson for last yrs First rounder....bottom line is thats 2 horrible drafts in a row if our First this year doesn't pan out.

If Barkley and Jones are so muich better than Newton and Gabbert. They won't be available after the first 5 picks let alone at 12.

depends on need of teams drafting, and if we don't address offense a decent chance we will be picking top 5 next yr, wherever we are we'd be in a position where a trade up would be feasible to draft anyone other than luck.

They last 2 NFC S teams with new HCs that were predicted to be horrific were:

the 2008 Falcons - 24th pick in 09

the 2009 Bucs -3rd pick in 2010

Carolina outside the QB position is a MUCH better team than the 2008 Falcons. Carolina was not your typical 2 win team in 2010. From a talent aspect, they had more than most teams in the NFL.......

Rivera could easily get to 8-8 with average QB play from a vet or rookie. Team he just got is loaded with talent 2 win teams simply don't normally have.......all it takes is a luck break to surprise people.

John Fox + horrible QB play has some people confused about what this roster really looks like. They are missing 1 puzzle piece.......and instantly can compete again

Trading up costy too many draft picks. But in regards to team need. Simple math tells you that we won't have a chance if we are picking 10 or hogher on a QB.

This year out of the teams picking 1-12, nine of those teams have a need at QB and only two are likely to get picked that high. History suggests that if you don't draft a QB in the first round it is difficult to find a quiality QB so you can be assured that many of those teams will be right back in the top 10 again next year.

And if these guys are as good as some say they are (I don't buy it personally) then they will be picked v ery early from these QB hungry teams. Unless we bomb again this year we likely have no chance.

Ron Rivera isn't coaching with the hope of having a top 5 pick next year.
