Now that it's almost certain Cam will be the pick, what are your thoughts?

Interestingly enough, there is debate over the Peterson/Meyer thing.

Meyer says he didn't recruit him... but when Peterson signed with LSU, Meyer raised a red flag about his ACTs. Peterson had to retake the ACTs, which delayed his entrance into LSU, despite the fact he passed them a second time.

First of all, I love PP and would be pretty excited if we got him so I'm not overly worried about it

Secondly a good chunk of the Newton stuff is debatable too. I just don't really want to debate it anymore.

Vagrant were you for us drafting Luck before he decided to go back to school?

I was because he was a guy that had the pedigree of being the type of player that was supposed to go 1st overall. He was the best at his position of any eligible player. At the time, Newton was a long shot to crack the Top 15 but when Luck pulled out.... Newton's stock went sky high. I think Luck had the ability to play better much quicker than Newton like the way Matt Ryan came into the Falcons and made them instantly better. I don't think that is there with Newton.

In answer to your previous question regarding what we should do if we did take PP, my answer is to pick up a young veteran QB who can play for us right away. In fact, as I mentioned in an earlier post, I would like for us to roll the dice on Vince Young because I think the pressure was unfair in his last location. If we signed Vince Young or another veteran QB like Matt Hasselbeck as a stop gap until a future group of QB's came into the draft and we were able to get a better look at a new class, that would be fantastic.

Plus, I think VY is more talented than Cam. He may not be faster, but I think he's a better QB.

That almost seems to come from this article:

http://www.aolnews.com/2011/02/02/patrick-peterson-and-carolina-panthers-a-perfect-match/

Which also says this:

The author was talking about himself there and I am having to do these fugging searches on my phone so sorry I am not doing as good a job as I normally would try to do. :(

I do get my computer back in 2 days though.

Second paragraph. I am having to do all this from my phone so this is a pain.

Thanks for posting that, but I think it does more to convince me that Urban Meyer is an idiot than proving that PP had character issues. He has an issue because he changed his name? Please. What a bonehead, Meyer.

yeah, I know. He's not saying Meyer changed his mind, just that he thought his character checked out.

However it is interesting, because LSU fans tell a different story. They say Peterson had previously committed to Miami. Meyer did a bit of courting. Peterson ended up going to LSU. Then, Urban Meyer questioned Peterson's ACT scores, forcing him to retake them, which kept him from competing for a starting position early.

We have a young talented vet. His name is Matt Moore. Any FA that is any good won't sign with a 2-14 team unless we way overpay. If we trade we give up multiple first round picks which will set a franchise back more than a bust.

Man, you are all over the map on this character thing. Cam is a thug, but VY was under unfair pressure?

Help me understand the logic, because it is clearly over my head.

Vagrant you know Im a VY fan, big time on this board. Ive defended him when no one else would here many a times. But if you notice, I havent really been hyping us up this offseason to go after him. IMO, it isnt a good fit for either party.

Not a good fit for the Panthers:

We need our own identity and not someone else's throwaway. IMO, us taking a first round QB is very important to establishing some sort of identity for ourselves. At some point we have to DEVELOP the most important position on the football field effectively. Right now, thats our biggest hurdle as a franchise IMO. We have never done it.

Not a good fit for VY:

As a VY fan, I would want a better situation and fanbase for VY as it stands. I dont feel our fanbase would give him the support or trust he's gonna need to become a better QB. I feel like he can go other places and get more of a "clean slate" than he would here. IMO, VY needs to get out of the South. Go West, or North VY.

I think it was a case of too much too soon with Vince. He seemed like a really quality kid at Texas and when he hit adversity in terms of his football career for the first time, it really shook him up. I think he is just now starting to recover and enjoy the game again after all this nonsense is getting past him. He's still a young guy and I don't think the character issues are there for him. Vince is his own hardest critic and he hates losing. I think Cam is a self-apologist that would deflect blame if he were to lose football games. At least that is how I view the situation.

And KT, as far as VY not getting a fair chance here that may or may not be true. After losing as much as we did last year, any form of success from the QB position could get the fans to rally behind anybody. If VY won a game or two here early, he would be a hero. It would be all about having a fast start and I think he has the skills to do it.

One of the "good" parts about going to a team that went 2-14 is that as a performer you know it was bad last year and that if you make it better even a little bit, then the fans will notice and appreciate it. We saw some terrible football last year.

Man...one of these days after watching Cam Newton holding up the Lombardi trophy at the parade on Mint Street, were all gonna look back at these threads and laugh

Or one of these days we will be watching Cam Newton holding up a newspaper on Mint Street trying to sell it wondering, "what the fug happened to the guy who was supposed to revolutionize the QB position. Yes giant guy with tiny ears I would like a paper."
