Now that it's almost certain Cam will be the pick, what are your thoughts?

Man...one of these days after watching Cam Newton holding up the Lombardi trophy at the parade on Mint Street, were all gonna look back at these threads and laugh

Only way he will be holding the Lombardi trophy is if he stole it....and we all know he has that in his genes.

Maybe through the eyes of a Cam lover

I just hear a whole lot of speculation and really not a lot to back it up.

Apparently through the eyes of a whole lot of people. Again, even the most anti-Cam folks out there have to admit he's the most likely pick at this point.

All of the beat writers are saying so; even Yas, who insisted we'd take a DL for over a month before suddenly changing his tune. I know the stock response to that will be "oh, it's just media hype" but what all of you are forgetting is that this is a MUCH different situation we're in than usual. They've been wrong a LOT when projecting our picks over the years (TE every year in the 1st) but this year we have the 1st pick and it's impossible for any GM to keep secret who we're looking at when there are only a handful of viable options. Plus, the media is watching our every move, something that's not true in the middle of the round.

Smokescreen? Please. This would be the most hard-headed and far-reaching smokescreen of all time by FAR. And in a year where there's zero chance anyone trade up with us. Hurney would never run a smokescreen and show so much attention to a player we weren't considering while not even bothering to show much attention at all to other options.

How many times have we brought Dareus in for a workout? His pro day; that's it. We've had 3 now with Cam after this week's, 4 if you count his combine workout, not to mention several dinners/meetings/etc. We've barely shown any interest in Peterson, Dareus, & Green, and while I'm sure we really like all three of those guys, it's common knowledge in the NFL that if you need a QB and are picking 1st, you have to take that risk. Hurney is no fool; he knows both he & Rivera's jobs depend on solidifying the QB position. Without one, all the talent in the world at every other position is meaningless.

I cannot WAIT until we take Cam just to see the reactions of all you folks who are seemingly in denial about all this. I get that you don't want him, but to deny our interest in him - or his status as the clear-cut favorite at this point - is just setting yourself up for massive disappointment when we actually do take him.

Ever since Luck pulled out, Cam's been the clear cut favorite and its been his to lose. I mean literally for the past 3 months we've talked about Cam Newton far more than anything else involving the Panthers on this board, and dudes think we're not gonna take this guy? LOL. I think this offseason has shown just how uncomfortable we are having a spotlight on us, and having a #1 overall pick like this.

How can you say it is almost certain when the Panthers are still evaluating him as I write. If it was certain they could all go home and drink beer until the draft.

What I'm saying is that Cam is and has been atop their board for the last 2 months. They want to take him and unless he screws up his visit they will. Is it a 100% certainty? Of course not. But it's as close as you can get this far away from draft day.

Remember how we were picking 27th that year and had to worry about teams taking the guy we wanted ahead of us? Why can't anyone here understand the difference in the process a team goes through when they're picking 1st overall compared to later in the round?

Remember how much we were playing up LenDale White, only to take DeAngelo Williams?

We had like the 29th pick that year, and I'm pretty sure that Williams was the best RB left on the board by then.

I'm not quite convinced that we're taking Cam either, but you're comparing apples to oranges.

The biggest thing for me would be that it's a great sign that we could be turning the corner from the Fox era being safe/mediocre with on the field play and decision making. High potential guy, with talent that wants to be one of the greats (sports icon statement). Even though we are a smaller market we don't want to fly under the radar drafting a guy that has the potential to lift a city ala Lebron/Cavs.

Remember how we were picking 26th that year and had to worry about teams taking the guy we wanted ahead of us?

It couldn't be leverage to bait someone else who wants Cam to make a trade offer, could it?

Nothing in this life is certain... This is especially true in the game of poker that is the NFL draft... It honestly wouldn't surprise me if Bowers is our pick at this point, yet you and others are SO SURE it will be Cam Newton...

There is a chance, yes... but it isn't a guarantee...
