Which QB would you compare Cam Newton to?

Honesty, ya can't compare him to any nfl qb, as he hasn't done a thing yet. True story!

He could be much better than ben could think of being, but that is up to newton himself. He has a natural throwing motion. He is more mobile than ben.

That being said, i f at the end of his career he is compared to big ben minus the sexual assult charges, than he'd be worth the pick.

if he learns how to be a pass first QB then he will be like a quicker josh freeman, which would be ridiculously scary. how many times last year did we think that we had freeman for a sack, or a play completely contained downfield only for him to roll out of the pocket, extend the play and either run for a first or find someone open? Yeah, he could be like that only a little bit quicker and more explosive. freeman is no slouch athletically, and newton is even more athletic. where Freeman is like the bus from the movie speed, Newton has the potential to be the death bus from dawn of the dead.

Yeah, and Josh Freeman only ran about a 4.9 something at his combine and he was slower than Newton in the cone drills as well. So if Newton can learn the passing game as well as Freeman...look out!

A bigger thicker more durable Randall Cunningham. He has the moves, the size and the arm that Cunningham had. Cunningham was 215 lbs whereas Newton is closer to 250. So I would think if he can do what Cunningham did with a better supporting cast, we could have a winner.

Size....Big Ben.

Skillset....I see some Josh Freeman and Vince Young. Threat with both running and passing. Don't see skillset equal with Ben. Ben is mobile and uses his legs to extend the passing play. Newton tucks and becomes a RB when his first read is not there.

Intangibles....I actually see some Russell in him (hope I am wrong on this one). Russell got caught up in the spotlight, money, and fame aspect of beign an NFL QB. He was not willing to put in the work even though he had physical sckills that were off the chart. Cam has great physical skills. His whole "Icon and Entertainer" statements worry me about him getting caught up in the "rock-star" aspect of playin gin the NFL.

The best comparison of Newton is to Steve Young. Most people only know of Steve Young as the Super Bowl winning QB for the San Fransisco 49er's but their is a lot more to Young than just his days in San Fran.

Coming out of college, Young was seen as an amazing athelet with great upside but very raw. The USFL took a gamble in signed Young away from the NFL by offering him a contract that Young still recieved payments on until 2007! His one year in the USFL was good but Young didn't realy show anything special and a lot of his successes came from his mobility.

In 1984, Tampa selected Young in the supplemental draft and Young had a horrible season. Compared to the USFL, the NFL was so much faster and Young struggled to find a way to use his mobility to his advantage. After a second season just as horrible, Young was traded to the 49ers where he was able to learn the West Coast Offense under Bill Walsh. This offense fit Young to a "T" and used all of Young strengths and masked many of Young's weaknesses. One of which was the route system and passing game that relied on recievers running to an open lane or window as opposed to the QB passing over a defender.

Newton's career path could so easily be similar to Young's. Newton is raw and has amazing physical skills. A good coach will be able to use those to their advantage, a bad coach will not. And Newton is probably more suited to a WCO given his tendancy to throw into an open window and not over the defender. (Not saying he can't become a good QB in another system, just that may be more suited to be in a WCO.)

Newton and Young also share a desire for the spotlight and could be seen as lacking humilaty. Again, most don't see Young in that light now, but the guy took a $40million dollar contract to play in the USFL. He was wanting attention and got it.

Newton is a lot bigger than Young but Young was way faster. They're not an exact match, but IMO Newton has a very similar skill set and mentality to Young coming out of college and he could similar success given the right coaching.

Akili Smith...GREAT Athlete but fails in that he wants his stardom handed to him. Akili failed to work for his stardom by not being the first one in the meetings and last one to leave. By not studying relentlessly instead of hanging out with his boyz. He failed to use the off season to better his career by working to get better relentlessly instead of partying relentlessly.

If Cameron claims that he wants to be a diva and have stardom, he must understand the work required to attain his goals or else he will fall into the same trap of thinking that his athletic talent alone will carry him as a QB in the NFL. He must work tirelessly at developing his mental skills as must all rookie QB's coming into the league.

If we draft him, I hope that he indeed does these things in order to be our QB of the future and the QB that all future QB's must try to emulate in order to be successful.

Poor Work ethics have destroyed many promising great athletes from being great QB's in the NFL: Smith and Ryan Leaf are the two that immediately come to mind.

He is a few players with some personal touch that can't be accounted for but all-around, I think he is closest to Ben. Not very intelligent, will tuck and run, little faster and more athletic, but hard to say if he'll be as tough and able to take the hits from that QB style consistently like Ben does, makes strong throws down field that are not very accurate. Young is an OK comparison, Young was faster and smarter though and I doubt Newton is as successful by the same means, he'll have more success playing like Ben I believe with his skill set.
