There are two different angles that you could take when trying to trade down...

1. You publically voice your opionion that you intend to select the player you feel most teams have #1 overall, hoping a team jumps the gun and tries to trade for that particular player.

2. You keep all information a secret (as the Panthers have) creating a cloud of speculation. This generates trade possibilities because no team knows who is going to be drafted and wants to secure the top position to ensure the opportunity to get "their" guy.

With no prospects clearly seperating themselves from the pack, I would assume we would choose to keep all info a secret then and hope someone bites.... possibly keeping it a secret up to the last second

I think the Panthers are kind of doing both 1 and 2. They are slowly voicing their opinion that Newton is the #1 guy hoping that most teams have him #1 on their board, thus hoping someone will trade up to get him. When in reality, they really want Gabbert at #3 or #4. I believe there is still a huge cloud of speculation regardless.

I'd love for us to trade down.

I just don't have any confidence in anyone else wanting to trade up :(

I was listening to Pat Kirwin and he said realistically you wouldn't be able to trade more than 4 or 5 spots up at the top of the draft or it gets really expensive. If he is right, we won't be talking to anyone who is lower than 6 or 7. I really don't believe that they will want to trade up at this point.

That assumes you trade down only once though.

You could trade down, and then trade down again with someone else. The Pats do it a lot.

(again though, someone has to want to trade up)

It depends if there is a team that will inquire about the pick. If RR/MH want Newton, there is no reason to trade down b/c more than likely the team trading up, wants him. We have to determine the value of the pick independently, not what anyone else says. If the #5 or #7 pick wants the first pick and will offer their 2nd, I think that is pretty fair this year, and as long as our pick isnt going to be Cam, it could happen. I personally dont expect a trade, but I have been wrong before.
