How soon until we know?

How soon till we know?

In my mind, the most likely answer is not until the last few seconds when our time is up on draft day.

If our "war room" hasn't already paired down the draftees to a group of 3 players in the final running, then they haven't been working hard enough. I'd say it is likely that the team already knows which player they are going to draft, barring any unforseen complications.

Unless we receive a proposition from a team, our pick has the most trade value while other teams are guessing who we might take. The one unique value of the first overall pick is that it delivers CERTAINTY. We should be stressing that fact to any team that is counting on a player being there when they are up.

Which players have clearly segregated themselves from the pack and established that they are worth paying a premium for certainty in this draft? AJ Green, Peterson, Miller. That's probably it.

You'll see Darius thrown in the mix, but I don't think it is obvious that he is far better than Fairley, which really means either man would probably do. That either would do reduces the value of our pick to teams that need a top rate DT. I am going to guess that every team knows we won't be taking Miller.

That means the Panthers should be looking for an opportunity to trade down with a team that is hoping for or counting on the availability of Peterson or Green. If not, then our boys better already know EXACTLY who they plan on taking.

Knowing ESPN, they will have every reporter snooping everywhere they can right up until it is announced. I'm sure half of the staff at BOA are or will be hit up by the media begging for morsel of information.

If a miracle happens and Hurney is able to keep it hush hush until we are on the clock, look for Berman to have two guys hovering right around the guy at the table who takes the piece of paper. Berman would love to be the 1st to break the news and ruin it for the rest of us.

There are two different angles that you could take when trying to trade down...

1. You publically voice your opionion that you intend to select the player you feel most teams have #1 overall, hoping a team jumps the gun and tries to trade for that particular player.

2. You keep all information a secret (as the Panthers have) creating a cloud of speculation. This generates trade possibilities because no team knows who is going to be drafted and wants to secure the top position to ensure the opportunity to get "their" guy.

With no prospects clearly seperating themselves from the pack, I would assume we would choose to keep all info a secret then and hope someone bites.... possibly keeping it a secret up to the last second

I expect us to trade the pick with the Bengals or Bills a few days or so before the draft.

I was thinking the same but with the Bengals or Cardinals.

I was also thinking that we would take the full 10 minutes and then announce the trade to whomever gave us the best deal. No need in trading early at all when you cannot do any negotiating with the player.

Player will receive same pay no matter who drafts them.
